3-day strike in Khagrachari protesting gun attack

Khagrachari, May 5 (UNB) - The Greater Parbatya Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Odhikar Forum on Saturday called for dawn-to-dusk strike from Sunday to Tuesday in the district protesting the killing of a microbus driver in the Friday's gun attack that left five people dead.

The leaders and activists of the two groups announced the strike after staging demonstrations protesting the gun attack at Betchari in Naniarchar upazila.

They also demanded the release of three people who were allegedly abducted from Khagrachari on April 16.

Rangamati unit of Greater Parbatya Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Odhikar Forum also announced daylong strike on Monday and Tuesday and would hold protest rally on Sunday protesting the attack.

After the attack, persistent patrolling by Army and police were underway at important points of the district while additional forces were deployed around the sadar upazilas of Rangamati and Khagrachhari.

Meanwhile, Chattogram range DIG SM Moniruzzaman said they would spot the killers at any cost and bring to book.

Meanwhile, the funeral programmes of Tapan Jyoti Chakma, chief of United People's Democratic Front (Ganotantrik) and Pronok Chakma alias Tanay, 23, a member of Jubo Samiti, were held in Tetultola of Khagrachhari this morning instead of their home in Rangmati over security issue and the funeral programmes of Sujon Chakma and Setu Chakma were held at Mohalchhari.

Besides, the body of driver Sajib was taken to his village home in Barisal.

Five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of the followers of slain Naniarchar upazila parishad chairman Shaktiman Chakma at Betchhari in the upazila on Friday.

They came under the attack while going to attend the funeral programme of the slain upazila parishad chairman at his Kukurmara family crematory in the upazila from Khagrachhari.

Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex on Thursday.
