Rangamati, May 7 (UNB) – The 48-hour hartal enforced by Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Nagorik Parishad in the district protesting the killings of five people, including microbus driver Sajib Hawladar, in Naniarchar upazila was postponed on Monday afternoon, eight hours after its enforcement.
Begum Nurjahan, convener of Parbatya Nagorik Parishad, came up with the announcement around 2:30 pm following assurance from the local administration of meeting their demands.
The demands also include the rescue of three people who were allegedly abducted from Khagrachhari on April 16.
Earlier, the two organisations enforced the shutdown in the district at 6am protesting the killings of five people on their way to attend the funeral programme of slain Naniarchar upazila parishad Chairman Shaktiman Chaktma on Friday.
The vehicular movement on all routes in the district remained suspended since the morning following the hartal.
No long route bus was seen plying roads while most of the businesses kept their shutters down.
The hartal supporters also brought out processions in separate places.
Meanwhile, the second day of a three-day strike enforced by Greater Parbatya Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Odhikar Forum passed off peacefully in Khagrachhari district on Monday.
The organisations of Bangali settlers on Saturday called the dawn-to-dusk strike from Sunday to Tuesday protesting the killing of microbus driver Sajib Hawladar during the Friday's gun attack that left five people dead.
On May 4, five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of the followers of slain Naniarchar upazila parishad chairman Shaktiman Chakma at Betchhari in the upazila.
They came under the attack while going to attend the funeral programme of the slain upazila parishad chairman at his Kukurmara family crematory in the upazila from Khagrachhari.
Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex on May 3.
