Dhaka, Dec 20 (UNB) - Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to enhance international cooperation in bringing positive and qualitative changes in migration governance.
“Bangladesh looks at migration as an integral component of her development aspirations as envisaged by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her vision for a prosperous Bangladesh,” said Ambassador Masud Bin Momen, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York.
He made the remarks while delivering a statement at the UN headquarters focusing on the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) on Wednesday. Bangladesh voted in favour of the resolution on the Global Compact on Migration.
Ambassador Momen said it is imperative to frame a national migration strategy for implementing the recommendations of the newly adopted Global Compact while remaining attentive to these core aspects.
“Capacity building, resource mobilisation and cooperation at all levels remain crucial for our collective endeavour to succeed,” he said.
Ambassador Momen reiterated that adoption of GCM is not an end in itself, rather, beginning of a new phase.
He said this is a paradigm shift to establish migration as a development phenomenon. “Perhaps I should add, this Compact could have been bolder and more inspirational. Hence, we’re pleased to see there’s a provision for the Review Mechanism every four years.”
The envoy affirmed that the implementation and review of this Compact will be state-led and state-owned, though open to participation of relevant stakeholders, as appropriate.
Bangladesh has already finalised a draft national strategy on migration governance in consultation with all stakeholders and with assistance from IOM.
