Rajshahi, Dec 20 (UNB) – Police recovered the hanging body of a student from a madrasah at Ranibazar in the city on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Talha Zubayer, 12, son of Afsar Ali of Bagha upazila.
Sirajul Islam, director of Ranibazar Hafezia Madrasah, said Talha took admission in the madrasah in June this year. Noticing that Talha remained absent in the Magrib prayers, the authorities went to his room and found the body hanging from the ceiling.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to a local hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Nityan Das, officer-in-charge of Boalia Police Station, said the cause of the death was not immediately known.
Bagerhat, Dec 20 (UNB) – At least three people were killed and 15 others injured when a bus overturned after hitting a roadside tree on Khulna-Mongla highway at Sonatunia in Rampal upazila early Thursday.
Two of the deceased were identified as Kamrul, 25, son of Sarwar Hossain of Mongla upazila and Ferdous, 42, son of Abu Taher of Telikhali village in Rampal upazila while the identity of the other could not be known yet.
Moloy Roy, officer-in-charge of Katakhali highway police, said the accident took place around 3:30 am when a Mongla-bound bus of ‘Arafat Paribahan’ from Dhaka hit a roadside tree as the driver lost his control over steering and turned turtle, leaving two dead on the spot and 16 others injured.
The injured were taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared one dead.
Meanwhile, the traffic movement on the busy highway remained suspended for about five hours following the incident.
Rajshahi, Dec 20 (UNB) – Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered six kilogramme explosive making materials worth Tk 3.28 lakh from Yusufpur Padmarchar in Charghat upazila on Wednesday.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-1 conducted a drive in the area and recovered the explosive substance kept in a packet in an abandoned condition, said BGB-1 commanding officer Mohammad Tajul Islam.
However, none was arrested in this connection as the smugglers managed to flee the scene.
Dhaka, Dec 19 (UNB) – The mortal remains of renowned film director Amjad Hossain will reach Dhaka on Friday evening.
A flight of Bangladesh Airlines carrying the body took off at 4:15pm from Thailand, which is scheduled to arrive here around 7pm on Friday.
The much celebrated film director breathed his last at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok on December 14.
Earlier, Amjad Hossain suffered a stroke at his residence on November 18. Later, he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of Impulse Hospital in the capital.
On November 27, he was sent to Bangkok by an air ambulance for better treatment after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took the responsibility for his treatment.
President Abdul Hamid on Friday had expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of prominent film director Amjad Hossain.
In a condolence message, the President prayed for salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Films directed by Amjad Hossain included “Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978),” “Sundori (1979),” “Koshai (1980),” “Jonmo Theke Jolchi (1982),” “Bhat Dey (1984)”, “Golapi Ekhon Dhakay (2006)" and “Golapi Ekhon Bilatey (2010).”
Apart from the National Film Award for several times, he had received many other awards, including the Ekushey Padak in 1992.
Barishal, Dec 19 (UNB) – Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam on Wednesday suggested the officials the commission to stay away from misuse of law.
Attending a discussion over national election at Deputy Commissioner’s office in Sadar upazila, Kabita Khanam said “We have to be alert that the festivity of the polls never turns into fear. The election must not be questionable.”
Election Commission must not show any discretionary attitude and be aware that commission’s direction never remains in words only, she added.
All have to remain sincere about the security of the polling centers while all forces must work unitedly, she warned.
Deputy Commissioners of six districts, police superintendents, Upazila Nirbahi Officers, Officer-in-charges, Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard, National Security Intelligence (NSI), Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), top officials of Election Commission were present there among others.
