Narayanganj, Oct 5 (UNB) - A young man surrendered to police on Friday after killing his wife over a trivial matter in Fatullah of the city.
The deceased was identified as Arefin Rani Akhter, 23, wife of Mehedi Hasan, 30, of Chandni Housing Area.
Sub-inspector Mamun Al-Javed of Fatullah Model Police Station said Arefin, daughter of Abdur Rahim of Natore district, was married off to Mehedi two years ago. Since then, the couple had been living in a house of the area.
They locked into an altercation on Thursday night over charging mobile phone battery. At one stage, Mehedi strangulated his wife to death.
He turned up to the police station on Friday noon confessing to his crime, the SI said, adding that they recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.
Sylhet, Oct 5 (UNB) – A teacher of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) died of cardiac arrest while saying Juma prayers at the university central mosque on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Md Khairulah, 35, an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering department of the university.
SUST Registrar Mohd Ishfaqul Hussain said Khairullah collapsed on the ground while performing the Juma prayers in the afternoon.
He was taken to Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Khairullah had been suffering from illness for the last several days, his colleagues said.
On completion of higher study in Canada, he rejoined the SUST Computer Science and Engineering department in April last. He was staying in the university dormitory for teachers.
Hailing from Cumilla, Khairullah was a 1998-99 batch student of the university.
His wife Farhana Rumzum Bhuiyan is a lecturer of Botany department at Chittagong University.
Sylhet, Oct 5 (UNB) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Friday said electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in the next general election on a small scale if the Representation of the People Order (RPO) is amended.
He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting the EC stall at the three-day development fair at Sylhet Alia Madrasah ground in the afternoon.
The fair that began on Thursday will end on Saturday.
The CEC said EVMs are being showcased at the development fair in all the 64 districts to raise awareness about their use.
He urged the leaders of political parties to visit the EC stall to have knowledge about EVMs.
Asked when the schedule for the next general election will be announced, Nurul Huda said they were yet to take any decision in this regard.
He expressed the hope that a free, fair and neutral election will be held with cooperation from all.
Token voting was also held using EVMs and the CEC announced the results after the polling.
Nurul Huda will stay here overnight and go to Sunamganj on Saturday.
Dhaka, Oct 5 (UNB) – Members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested two alleged drug dealers along with 784 bottles of Phynsidyl syrup from Motijheel area in the city on Thursday.
The arrestees are Maksud Ali alias Jonny, 26, and Sabbir Ahmed alias Setu, 25.
Based on secret information, a team of the specialised anti-crime unit conducted a drive near Sundarban Courier Service of Motijheel at noon and arrested the two alleged drug dealers along with the contraband syrup, said sources at the CTTC.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees revealed that they brought the contraband drug item from Chapainawabganj.

Dhaka, Oct 5 (UNB) – President Abdul Hamid will join the largest-ever convocation of Dhaka University (DU) on Saturday.
The convocation will begin at the DU central playground at 11:30am but the graduates have been asked to enter the venue by 11am.
A DU press release on Friday said the President will preside over the convocation ceremony while National Professor Anisuzzaman will deliver the convocation speech.
Record 21,111 students have registered for the 51st convocation.
Alongside, 96 students will get gold medals from the President while Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degrees will be conferred on 81 and 51 respectively.
Seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University will participate in the convocation for the first time from two venues -- Dhaka College and Eden Mohila College -- through digital technology.
DU Vice-chancellor M Akhtaruzzaman on Friday called for all-out cooperation from all to make the convocation a success.
The DU administration told UNB that all preparations have already been completed to hold the convocation in a festive mood.
