Sylhet, Oct 1 (UNB) – Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Monday said BNP will lose its existence as a political party if it does not participate in the next general election.
The minister came up with the remarks after attending a meeting with government officials of the district at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
“No system can be more appropriate than the existing one for holding a free and fair election,” Muhith added.
About electricity supply, Muhith said, “The government has relentlessly been working to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in Sylhet …now the district gets electricity what it exactly needs. So, the government officials concerned should lose their jobs if there’s any complaint from any consumer about the electricity supply here.”
Local political leaders, senior officials of the district and the police administrations were also present on the occasion.
Narayanganj, Oct 1 (UNB) – Miscreants snatched Tk 2.48 lakh from a distribution and sales officer (DSO) of a bKash dealer on Dhaka-Munshiganj highway in Fatullah on Monday noon.
Talking to UNB, victim Saikat Hossain said he was returning to his office after collecting money from different bKash agents in Naya Bazar and Bhanga Club areas.
When he reached in front of Jahangir Store near Fatullah Filing Station, a group of armed miscreants waylaid him around 12 noon and took away Tk 2.48 lakh at gunpoint.
They also fired two rounds of bullet and blasted two crude bombs in a bid to flee the scene creating panic.
Soon after the incident, he lodged a complaint with Fatullah Model Police Station, said Shah Manjur, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Benapole, Oct 1 (UNB) – A young man was killed and another injured as a tree branch fell on them in Navaran Bazar area on Benapole-Jashore road on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Nur Hossain, 22, son of late Kadar Ali of Kashiadanga in Sharsha upazila.
Sergeant Politon Miah, in-charge of Navaran Highway Police camp, said a branch of the 100-year-old tree broke down and fell on the two youths around 9:30 pm while they were going through the road riding a motorcycle, leaving them injured.
Locals took the duo to Jessore General Hospital where Nur was declared dead, he said.
Dhaka, Oct 1 (UNB) – Speakers at a seminar on Monday called for ensuring proper waste management in the city.
They said environmental hazards can be reduced through proper waste management.
They were speaking at a seminar on ‘Solid Waste Management Challenges’ marking the World Habitat Day held at the EMK Center in the city’s Dhanmondi.
Nature Study Society of Bangladesh (NSSB) and Edward M. Kennedy Center for Public Service and the Arts (EMK) organized the programme.
Founder Director of NSSB Captain Kawsar Mostafa delivered a presentation on ‘Solid Waste Management’ at the seminar.
He said “The municipal solid wastes have been a great challenge all over the world today for their huge volume and problem of properly managing the same. So it is urgent for taking steps for proper management of waste in the city.”
Brand Ambassador of NSSB (JU) Aflatun Kaeser Zilany spoke on ‘Engaging youth in turning waste into resources’.
Director of EMK Center Naveed Akbar also spoke.
Students and members from University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Northern University of Bangladesh (NUB), Motijheel Ideal College, Volunteer For Bangladesh, different school, college, university and organization of city area participated the programme.

The United Nations has declared the first Monday of October every year as the World Habitat Day, to reflect on the state of our cities and towns, and on the basic rights of all for an adequate shelter.
Bagerhat, Oct 1 (UNB) – Two people were killed and another person was injured in an attack allegedly over Awami League infighting at Doibaggahati in Morelganj upazila on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Ansar Ali Dihidar, general secretary of Doibaggahati union unit of AL, and Sukur Sheikh, 42, an activist of the unit.
The injured, Bablu Sheikh, labour secretary of Tanti League’s Doibaggahati unit, was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Police super of the district Pankaj Chandra Roy said three miscreants wearing burqas swooped on the Doibaggahati union parishad complex in the afternoon and tried to kill its chairman Shahidul Islam.
However, the chairman’s supporters caught them and beat them mercilessly, killing one on the spot and injuring two others, he said, adding that one of the injured succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
Two supporters of the UP chairman were arrested for interrogation over matter, the SP said.
However, injured Bablu claimed that armed cadres of Shahidul picked them up from Doibaggahati Bazar area in the afternoon and took them to the union parishad complex. “They forced us to wear burqas. Later, the chairman took us outside and started shouting saying we tried to kill him. His supporters swooped on us with arms and sticks,” he said.
He also claimed that they were victims of a planned conspiracy over previous enmity, he said.
