Dhaka, Jan 7 (UNB) – A suspected drug addict slaughtered a young woman at Bangshal of Old Dhaka early Monday reportedly for discarding him as the drug-taking partner.
The deceased was identified as Rani, 25.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mitford Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Sahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bangshal Police Station.
Soon after the incident, police arrested the killer, Sohagh, 23, when he confessed to the killing, the OC said.
He said Sohagh used to take drugs together with Rani. However, Rani left him recently and started taking drugs with another partner.
They locked into an altercation in the early hours over the issue. At one stage, Sohagh slit the throat of Rani with a blade, leaving her dead on the spot.
Chattogram, Jan 7 (UNB) – Police recovered the bullet-hit body of a suspected criminal at Beribadh in Sandwip upazila on Monday.
The deceased Kala Monir is also a listed arms trader, said local people.
Being informed by local people, police recovered the body of Kala Monir and sent it to local hospital morgue for autopsy, said Shamsul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sandwaip Police Station.
Police suspected that Kala Monir might have been killed in a gunfight between two groups of criminals over enmity.
Police also recovered two firearms from the spot.
On October, 25, last year, police unearthed an arms factory and recovered 20 firearms from his residence at Rahmatpur union in the upazila. Police also arrested two people including his wife in this connection.
Dhaka, Jan 7 (UNB)- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Tuesday and Wednesday as she has become the head of government for the record fourth time.
Sheikh Hasina will pay tributes to Bangabandhu, the architect of independent Bangladesh, by placing a wreath at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi at 10am on Tuesday.
Later at 11am, she along with her new cabinet colleagues will go to the National Mausoleum at Savar and pay tributes to the Liberation War martyrs.
Sheikh Hasina will also go to Tungipara of Gopalganj on Wednesday to pay homage to Bangabandhu.
The Prime Minister along with her new cabinet colleagues will pay tributes to Bangabandhu by placing a wreath at his mazar around 11am.
A smartly turned out contingent to be drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force will give guard of honour on the occasion.
Sheikh Hasina will offer fateha and join a munajat seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu.
Bagerhat, Jan 7 (UNB) – Hours after taking oath as the deputy minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Begum Habibun Nahar asked the authorities concerned of the Forest Department to take necessary steps for stopping fishing after spraying pesticides in the rivers and cannels inside Sundarbans.
“Local MPs should have to work hard for protecting the world heritage site Sundarbans. Sundarbans is for all and everyone should take responsibility to protect it,” she said while talking to UNB, sharing her thoughts.
At this moment, the most threatening things for Sundarbans is spraying pesticides as most of the fishermen were involved in catching fish by mixing pesticides, she said.
It is the easiest way for them to catch fishes, as those was seen floating in the rivers and canals water after getting contaminated by the pesticides.
She also asked the Forest Department to perform strictly for protecting the property of Sundarbans including tigers and deer.
Referring to the increase of salinity in Sundarbans, Habibun Nahar, said people are involved in cultivating shrimp which causes increase of salinity, damaging the environment. Besides, the diminution of sweet water resources also harms the environment, she said.
The deputy minister also asked to stop cultivating shrimp by making dams in the flowing canals.
Habibur Nahar has been elected MP from Bagerhat-3 (Rampal-Mongla) constituency thrice and she is also the wife of Khulna city Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khalek.
Sylhet, Jan 7 (UNB) – At least two workers have been killed as a stone quarry collapsed while extracting stones in Shah Arefin Tila of Companiganj Upazila on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Sona Mia, 25, son of Anwar Hossain and Nurul Haque, 30, son of Wazed Ali of Sunamganj upazila.
Locals said the duo were extracting stones in a stone quarry around 3 pm when it collapsed on them killing them on the spot.
Officer-in-Charge of Companiganj Police Station Jashim Uddin said they were trying to recover the bodies.
