Sylhet, Oct 13 (UNB) – Police arrested a local leader of Bangladesh National Party (BNP) in an explosive case from Natunbazar area in Biswanath upazila on Saturday noon.
The arrestee was identified as Abdul Hai, member of Sylhet District BNP and senior joint-secretary of Biswanath upazila unit BNP.
The accused was produced before the court showing him arrested in the explosive case filed by police, said Md Samsuddoha, officer-in-charge of Biswanath Police Station.
On September 2, four crude bombs were blasted simultaneously in different spots of the town. However, no one was injured in those blasts.
Later, Sub-inspector Sabuj Kumar of Biswanath Police Station filed the case accusing 50-60 unnamed people including Abdul Hai.
Dhaka, Oct 13 (UNB) - Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no three on Saturday as the Land depression over Gangetic-West Bengal and adjoining areas moved northeastwards, weakened into well marked low first and then into a low.
The land depression was lying over southwestern part of Gangetic-West Bengal and adjoining North Bay of the country at 3 pm Saturday, said a Met office bulletin.
It is likely to move northeastwards further inland and become unimportant.
Under its influence, steep pressure gradient persists over North-Bay, the deep convection is taking place over North Bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh.
Squally weather is likely to affect the maritime ports, North Bay and adjoining coastal- areas of Bangladesh.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
Dhaka, Oct 13 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed deep shock at the death of Meher Kabir, wife of late National Professor Kabir Chowdhury.
The Prime Minister prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to her bereaved family members.
Dhaka, Oct 13 (UNB) – Just before the announcement of the framework of greater national unity, a rift has developed between Dr Kamal Hossain and Dr Badruddoza Chowdhury as they called for separate press conferences today (Saturday) to clear their positions.
Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, led by Dr Kamal, will hold a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club at 6pm while B Chowdhury will brief media at his residence half-an hour later.
Earlier on Friday night, the leaders of BNP, Jukta Front and Jatiya Oikya Prokriya finalised a draft framework of greater national unity with identical demands and goals to force the government to hold a fair and neutral election.
The senior leaders of BNP and the two alliances were scheduled to hold a meeting at Dr Kamal Hossain’s residence this afternoon to finalise the framework of the greater national unity and make it public.
B Chowdhury and some Bikolpo Dhara leaders, including Mahi B Chowdhury, went to join the meeting at Kamal’s residence around 3:30pm only to find the door of the house shut from outside.
Later talking to reporters, Mahi B Chowdhury said it its discourteous to keep the door shut after inviting a former President. “This incident has exposed who are against the unity.”
He said they will hold a press conference at 6:30pm in their residence to make their stance on the unity clear.
BNP sources said Dr Kamal Hossain held a meeting with BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, JSD president ASM Rob, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna at his Motijheel chamber around 2:30pm.
At the meeting, they decided to hold a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club around 6pm.
Manna and Rob had long been there in Jukta Front, led by B Chowdhury, to forge the national unity.

Jashore, Oct 13 (UNB) – A suspected ‘criminal’ was killed in a ‘gunfight’ allegedly between two gangs of miscreants at Old Kosba area in the city early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Taizul Rahman, 34, son of Hafizur Rahman of Kholadanga area in the city.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, Apurba Hasan said in the early hour they went to the spot after being informed about a gunfight at Old Kosba area.
They found a bullet-hit body of Taizul from the spot, who was accused in seven murder cases including a recent murder of Jubo League activist in Kazipara area, he said.
Jubo League activist Sohag was hacked and slaughtered to death by some miscreants on September 28.
The body of Taizul was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said the OC.
