School girl drowns in Chattogram pond
A fourth grader drowned in a pond at Gachbaria Nayapara in Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram on Sunday afternoon.
Student drowns in Dhaka College pond while taking a bath
The deceased was identified as Jannatul Tahseen, 10, daughter of Md Rubel of Gachbaria Talukderpara area and a student of Gachbaria Model Govt. Primary School.
Deceased’s father said, she went to visit a relative at Gachbaria Nayapara area and drowned while taking bath in the pond.

Later, locals rescued her and took her to Chandanaish Health Complex where doctors declared her dead.
Dr. Urmi, medical officer of Chandanaish Health Complex, said, she had died before she was brought to the hospital.

People in northern districts suffer due to incessant rain
The low-lying areas of the northern districts including Rangpur, Kurigram, and Nilphamari have been inundated due to the incessant rainfall for the last couple of days, causing immense sufferings to the residents.
In Nilphamari, the low-lying areas of 14 villages in Dimla upazila of the district have been inundated due to the rainfall over the past five days till Sunday.
The villages include Char Bagir Char, Chatu Nama, Madhya Chandna, Rauta Bazar, Hater Bazar, Boro Bari, Char Jhunagachha, Boro chatna, Tepakhari Bari, Maddhya Khari Bari and other areas.
Abdul Awal, an officer of the local weather observatory center, said they have recorded 304 mm of rainfall in the past five days till 6 am on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department has recorded 179 mm of rainfall in Syedpur upazila of Nilphamari district in the past 24 hours till 6 am on Sunday, the highest rainfall of this season.
How to be Safe During and After Heavy Rains
In Rangpur, the low-lying areas of Rangpur district have been inundated due to the torrential rainfall for the last several days, causing untold suffering to the people.
Mostafizur Rahman, an officer of Rangpur Weather Observatory Centre, said the Met office has recorded 831 mm of rainfall in Rangpur division in the past 24 hours till 9 am on Sunday, the season’s highest rainfall in Rangpur division.
During this period, the met office has recorded 179 mm of rainfall in Syedpur of Nilphamari district, highest rainfall in this season. Besides, they also recorded 108 mm of rainfall in Rangpur district, he said.
Rain may continue for two more days, he added.
Rains likely to continue till September 25
The low-lying areas including Kamal Kasna, Mahiganj, Botla, New Jummapur, East Jummapara, Tajhat, Babupara, Kamarpara, Adrashapara, Nagar Mirganj, Shalban, Mistripara, Kalabari Darshana Modern intersection, Munshipara, Hanumantala, Mulatola, Medical Para in Rangpur district town have been submerged by the rain water.
In Kurigram, people, especially the daily wage earners have been facing difficulties due to the torrential rainfall for the last couple of days. The normal life of people was disrupted badly due to the rain.
Subol Chandra Roy, an officer of Kurigram Rajarhat Weather Observatory Centre, the Met office has recorded 59 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours till 3 pm while light to moderate rains will likely occur in the next 24 hours in the district.
The rains will continue for two more days, he said.
Nur Islam, a resident of Kadamtala village said “It has been raining since morning and I have no work. If it continues, then the normal life of people will be paralyzed.”
Anarul Kabir, a resident of Bhogdanga village, said already the Aman paddy crops have been damaged in last season and now the farmers sowed the seed of Aman again in this season. If the rains continue, Aman crops will be damaged again, he said.
More rains likely to drench Bangladesh
Besides, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted that there may be more rain across the country, including in Dhaka, over 72 hours starting from 9 am today.
“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at most places in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions, and at a few places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls in places over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions,” said the Met Office bulletin.
Highest rainfall in the country, 179 mm, was recorded in Nilphamari’s Saidpur in 24 hours till 6 am Sunday.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md. Shahab Uddin said that different least developed countries in the world are now following Bangladesh as a role model for development.

Notably, the fire service and civil defence station has been constructed in Juri upazila at a cost of Tk 3 crore 13 lakh. Besides, vehicles and other logistic support have been provided at a cost of about Tk 2 crores.

No reason to be delighted over US visa policy: Information Minister
Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday said there’s no reason for anyone to be delighted about the newly implemented US visa policy as it will apply only to those who obstruct electoral process.
“The bilateral cooperation and the multi-dimensional relation between Dhaka and Washington are getting,” the minister said while addressing a discussion meeting of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote marking the 91st death anniversary of Pritilata Waddedar at the Jatiya Press Club.

Hasan Mahmud, also Awami League’s joint general secretary, said Sheikh Hasina’s recent meetings with US President Joe Biden serve as a testament to the strong relationship between both nations.
"BNP changes its stance frequently. They state one thing after the visa policy announcement and another following the news of visa policy implementation in the newspaper the next day. It doesn’t matter what they say," said the information minister.
The minister said the country will continue to move forward by tackling all kinds of conspiracies under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.

Hasan Mahmud said the government welcomes foreign observers to observe the upcoming parliamentary election.
However, he said even in the absence of international observers, there would be no issues.
“This election is ours, this country is ours, we will decide how the election will be held here. We don't have to learn democracy from anyone. We know the practice of democratic norms. The democratic continuity under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina will definitely continue,” he said expressing confidence that the next election will be held on time and held in a free and fair manner.

Court permission might be needed for Khaleda’s treatment abroad: Home Minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Sunday said that there are some legal complications in allowing BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to go abroad for treatment and it might require permission from court.
“There may be a need for court approval as there are certain legal complications in allowing her to go abroad, and our ministry has nothing to do over the matter as it is under court’s jurisdiction. The law minister knows better about this,” he said these while talking to reporters at his ministry.

“It’s not about taking permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs. When applications are submitted to our ministry, they are forwarded to the Law Ministry. If the Law Ministry thinks that the matter falls within the court's jurisdiction, it is then sent to the court,” he said.
Responding to queries about any pending applications regarding Khaleda Zia's travel, the minister said, “We have not received any such application so far. I am telling you the procedures in case such an application is submitted.”

When questioned about previous applications from the BNP, he said, “Every time they apply, we grant approval to the extent possible. Beyond that, they have to go to court.”
On the issue of the United States' visa policy, the minister said, he is not aware of who fall under the US visa restriction.

“We have heard the declaration about the US visa policy, but they have not formally communicated it to us via letters,” he said.
“We don't know who fall under the restriction. Since we lack this information, I cannot comment on it,” he further said adding, “It is up to them to formulate their visa policy and decide who can enter their country. We have nothing to comment on it.”
Mother ‘poisons 3 children to death’, her condition critical
Three siblings died as their mother allegedly poisoned them before consuming it herself over family feud in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj district on Sunday.
The three children are Sakiba Begum, 15, her younger brothers Tambir Hossain,13 and Sahed Miah, 5, children of Jamuna Khatun and Jahangir Hossain of Shantipur village of the upazila.
Locals said the couple used to lock into altercation over family issues. The husband is a day-labourer and addicted to gambling, the said.
Deaths of 2 children after ‘pesticide poisoning’: 2 on 3-day remand
On Saturday night, the mother first fed poison to the children and then she swallowed it herself. The husband was not at the house at that time.
Hearing screams of the mother, the neighbours rushed to the house and took them to Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared the the children dead upon arrival.

President suggests Information Commission to be more proactive in RTI Act implementation
President Mohammed Sahabuddin on Sunday suggested the Information Commission Bangladesh(ICB) to be more proactive in implementing the Right to Information(RTI) Act to ensure people’s access to information.
The president came up with the suggestion when a 4-member delegation led by Chief Information Commissioner Dr. Abdul Malek presented the Annual Report-2022 at Bangabhaban, President's Press secretary Joynal Abedin told UNB.

During the meeting, the chief information commissioner informed the president about the overall activities of the commission.
The president said free flow of information ensures public welfare and curbs corruption.

The president asked the commission to take necessary measures to raise awareness among the people at the grass root level about the use of the act.
