Aga Khan School, Dhaka celebrates the Class of 2023
The Aga Khan School, Dhaka (AKS, D) has recently celebrated its graduating class of 67 talented students from the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) and the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) A Levels.
To honour the graduates, the ceremony was held at a Dhaka hotel which was attended by parents, students, staff and the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES), Bangladesh Board of Directors, said a media release on Monday.

Head of Senior School Fahmida Chowdhury congratulated the parents and graduates, envisioning a triumph-filled journey ahead.
“Remember that good things come to good people,” Fahmida said. “And if there is one thing I hope your education at The Aga Khan School, Dhaka has done, I hope it has instilled the values and ethics you need to make the right decisions in life and to be good people,” she said.
The keynote speaker, Chairman of AKES, Bangladesh Amyn Saleh, congratulated the graduating Class of 2023 on behalf of the Board of Directors.

He highlighted the rapid technological advancements and environmental changes that have taken place over the lifetimes of the graduates, emphasising the need for them to be adaptable, lifelong learners equipped with 21st-century skills.
He also commended the students' engagement in academics, service projects and sports.
“I was thrilled to learn that all of you have been engaged in many community service projects and, at the same time, you have earned excellent results not only in your exams and national Olympiads, but also on the sports field,” Chairman Amyn said. “I am equally amazed by the number of university acceptances and scholarships awarded to your graduating class.”

Bangladesh Budget 2023-24 passed in parliament
The parliament passed the Tk 7,61,785 crore national budget for FY 2023-24 -- with the goal of achieving 7.5 percent GDP growth rate and keeping annual inflation at around 6 percent.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal moved the Appropriations Bill 2023, seeking a budgetary allocation of Tk 11,10,840 crore which was passed by voice votes.

Earlier today, the parliament passed the Finance Bill 2023 with some changes.
Following the proposal mooted in the House by the Finance Ministry for the parliamentary approval of the appropriation of funds for meeting necessary development and non-development expenditures of the government, the ministers concerned placed justifications for the expenditure by their respective ministries through 59 demands for grants.

Earlier, the parliament rejected, by voice votes, a total of only 503 cut-motions that stood in the name of opposition members on 59 demands for grants for different ministries.
A total of 10 MPs, including from Jatiya Party and Gono Forum, submitted their cut-motions on the budget. They are: Kazi Firoze Rashid, Rustam Ali Farazi, Mujibul Huq, Fakhrul Imam, Pir Fazlur Rahman, Shamim Haider Patwari, Begum Rawshan Ara Mannan, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Mokabbir Khan, and Rezaul Karim Bablu.

They were, however, allowed to participate in the discussion on Commerce Ministry and Health Services Division.
Later, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury quickened the process of passing the demands for grants for different ministries without giving a lunch break.
Opposition and independent MPs were present in the House when the Appropriation Bill was passed, and they did not raise objection to passing the bill.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on June 1 placed a Tk 7,61,785 crore budget for Bangladesh for FY 2023–24, which is 15.2 percent of the GDP, with a philosophy of ensuring a hunger- and poverty-free, knowledge-based, and 'Smart Bangladesh' by 2041.
7.5% GDP growth rate with an expectation of keeping annual inflation at around 6%
The allocation for operating and other sectors is Tk 4,36,247 crore, while Tk 2,63,000 crore will go to the Annual Development Programme.
The total revenue is estimated at Tk 5 lakh crore. Out of this, Tk 4,30,000 crore will be collected by the National Board of Revenue and Tk 70,000 crore from other sources.

The overall deficit in the proposed budget for FY 2023-24 will stand at Tk 2,61,785 crore, which is 5.2 percent of GDP. Out of the total deficit, Tk 1,55,395 crore will be financed from domestic sources and Tk 1,02,490 crore from external sources.
Security guard stabbed to death in Dhaka's Agargaon
A 55-year-old man was stabbed to death in Dhaka's Agargaon area early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Azim Sheikh. He was a security guard of 59 West Agargaon Mia Tower. Azim was from the Tangail district.

Imam Hossain, owner of a flat in Mia Tower, said a young man named Sagor, 18, who is a tenant at the building, is the perpetrator.
Around 3 am, Sagor locked into an altercation with security guard Azim over opening the gate late at night, Imam Hossain said.

At one stage, Sagor stabbed Azim with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured.
Azim was first admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital. From there, he was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 4 am.
Sagor also suffered minor injuries during the scuffle and went to the hospital for treatment.

On information, police arrested Sagor from the hospital.
The dead body has been kept in the hospital mortuary for autopsy, said Inspector Bachhu Mia, in charge of the DMCH police outpost. Sher-e- Bangla Nagar police station has been informed on the incident, he added.
BMD predicts rain in Dhaka, other divisions
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted rain or thundershowers in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, over 24 hours — starting from 9 am today (June 26, 2023).
"Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at most places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over southern part of the country," the Met Office said.
The highest, 67 mm, rainfall was recorded in Barishal district in the country in 24 hours till 6 am on Monday.

The country may witness more rain over the next 72 hours, BMD also said.
Meanwhile, the low-pressure area over northwest Bay and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts in India now lies over north Odisha and adjoining area.

Man stabbed to death in Chapainawabganj
A man was stabbed to death by miscreantson Sunday night at Tuntuni Para area of Chapainawabganj's Shibganj upazila.
The deceased was Durul Hoda, 40, son of Chan Mandal of Miratuli Babbupur village in Nyalavanga Union.

Zobair Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station said Durul Hoda was accused in a murder case. But he was out on bail and staying in his father-in-law's house in Tuntuni para.
Around 7:30 pm, the miscreants entered the house and stabbed him multiple times, leaving him seriously injured, he said.

Relatives rescued him and took him to the 250-bed district hospital. From there, he was being taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, but died on the way.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, added the OC.
Eid-ul-Azha: Trade via Cumilla's Bibir Bazar land port to remain suspended for 6 days
Export-import activities between Bangladesh and India via the Bibir Bazar land port will remain suspended for six days, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the largest Muslim festivals, authorities said on Sunday.

Nirmal Chandra Pal, general secretary of Bibir Bazar Land Port C&F Agents‘ Association, said that trade activities will remain closed from June 27 to July 2 for the Eid holidays.
However, cross-border travel will continue through the immigration check post of the land port during this time, he added.

“Trade activities will resume at the Bibir Bazar land port from July 3,” he said.
Newly-elected NBJF committee takes charge
The newly elected committee of the North Bengal Journalists Forum (NBJF) formally took charge at a ceremony in the capital Saturday (June 24).

Bangladesh allows green chilli import as price keeps rising
The Ministry of Agriculture has allowed the import of green chilli in the wake of surging prices in the local market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The ministry permitted 30 importing firms to import a total of 11,600 metric tonnes of green chillies, said a release on Sunday (25 June).

Besides, 68 companies have been granted permission to import 55,600 MT of tomatoes, it added.
The price of green chilli has significantly risen in the local market recently.
