Croatia’s ‘golden generation’ nears end after World Cup
Argentina was a step too far for a Croatia team that reached back-to-back World Cup semifinals and shocked Brazil along the way in Qatar.
Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a 3-0 win at Lusail Stadium Tuesday and moved a step closer to lifting the one major trophy that has eluded him.
But for Croatia playmaker Luka Modric, this was almost certainly his last chance of winning the World Cup. He was substituted late on and left the field to applause from both sets of fans, who paid tribute to one of soccer’s greats.
Croatia will play France or Morocco in the third place playoff, but it is time to look ahead to the next generation.
EXPECTATION VS. PERFORMANCE
Beaten finalists at the World Cup in Russia four years ago, Croatia wasn’t expected to go deep again this time around. Especially after drawing 0-0 with underdog Morocco in its first group game.
That result has aged well as the tournament has progressed and Morocco emerged as the first African nation to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.
Croatia’s spirit has been its most notable quality, coming back from behind against Japan and Brazil to go through on penalties in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.

But the run to the semis also involved a degree of luck. Croatia could have been knocked out at the earliest possible stage if Romelu Lukaku had taken one of a series of chances in a 0-0 draw with Belgium in its final Group F game.
The Croatians certainly weren’t the most attractive team in Qatar, only winning one of six games in regulation or extra time, but they were tough to beat and defied expectations for the second World Cup in a row.
“They achieved great things and they’re the golden generation of Croatian football,” said coach Zlatko Dalić.
WHO’S OUT?
At the age of 37, Modric has likely played in his last World Cup, but he could still be around for the European Championships in 2024. Ivan Perisic and Dejan Lovren are both 33, and Andrej Kramaric, 31.
“Well, perhaps this is the end for the generation at the World Cup,” said Dalić. “A couple of them are at an age where it will be hard to play at the World Cup in 2026.
“I think a lot of players will finish off at Euro 2024.”
Dalić, who led Croatia to the final in Russia, also plans to stay on.
“I will continue, my contract runs until Euro 2024,” he said. “My plan is to qualify with Croatia for Euro 2024.”
WHO’S NEXT?
Center back Josko Gvardiol has been one of the standout players of the World Cup and has been linked with a host of Europe’s biggest clubs.

He was powerless to stop Messi’s moment of magic in the buildup to Argentina’s third goal, but he looks like he will be a key figure for his country going forward.
Mateo Kovacic is a seasoned international at 28, and could be the dominant force in midfield when Modric steps aside.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The third place playoff may seem like one of the most pointless games in soccer, but not for Croatia.
“Win the match and go back to Croatia with a medal,” said Modric. “We need to leave everything to win the bronze medal and let our fans celebrate one more time.”
Dalić is also looking further ahead to the Euros, with qualifying games against Wales and Turkey in March.

Chattogram Test: Despite Pujara's Impressive 90, Taijul Leads Bangladesh’s Fight
Bangladesh ended the first day of the Chattogram Test against India on a strong note, as they successfully took the sixth wicket of the day off the final ball.
India, who won the toss and chose to bat first, ended day one with a score of 278 for 6. Cheteshwar Pujara was the best Indian batter on the day with a remarkable 90 runs, while Shreyas Iyer remained unconquered at 82 not out.

For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam stood out, taking three wickets while conceding just 84 runs in 30 overs. He also kept the runs at bay, registering a remarkable eight maidens - the most by any Bangladeshi bowler for the day.
Taijul was at his best on the day, taking two remarkable wickets; the first being the imposing Cheteshwar Pujara who fell just 10 runs short of another Test century. He then proceeded to send the high-flying Virat Kohli back for only a run. This was all the more impressive given that Kohli had scored a hundred in the final ODI of the three-match series at the same venue.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz put in a great performance for Bangladesh too, taking two wickets; including the vital scalp of Axar Patel off the last ball of the day.
India had a strong start to the day, as the stand-in captain of India, Lokesh Rahul, and Shubman Gill played cautiously. In their opening stand, they added 41 runs before Taijul struck, dismissing Shubman for 20.
Within 48 runs, India had lost both Lokesh and Virat, leaving them in a difficult position in the middle. However, the fourth wicket partnership between Rishabh Pant and Pujara helped to steady the ship, as they added 64 runs to the board. Pant was looking good until Mehidy dismissed him for 46.
After Pant's departure, Pujara and Shreyas produced the highest partnership of the match so far, adding 149 runs to the scoreboard in a fifth-wicket stand. The partnership was eventually broken by Taijul, who dismissed Pujara.
Khaled Ahmed was the other successful bowler for Bangladesh, chipping in with a wicket.
At the end of day one, the Test was well poised, with Bangladesh most likely the happier side having taken the all-important wicket off the last ball of the day.
Messi fans overjoyed in south Asia after Argentina semi win
Soccer fan Gazi Jahidul Haque was struggling to hide his concern before the Argentina and Croatia World Cup semifinal at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium.
Haque was watching the game in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
“This World Cup is not only important for Argentina, but also for Messi,” 35-year-old lawyer Haque said before the game, his voice barely audible as thousands behind him thronged to watch the match in front of a giant television screen at the University of Dhaka in the capital’s center.
It was midnight Wednesday in Dhaka and by the time the final whistle blew with Argentina beating Croatia 3-0, Haque’s worries had long dissipated. Argentina was in the World Cup final, one win away from capturing the game’s greatest prize.
The win meant Haque would get to see Messi — a player widely regarded as one of the game’s best – one more time at the World Cup. The celebrations began.
Fans poured onto the streets in Dhaka waving Argentina flags and wearing the team’s sky blue and white jersey. Amid blaring trumpets, they chanted Messi’s name and hugged each other. Some held motorbike rallies. Others broke into song and dance. A young man rode on a rikshaw, his body painted in Argentinian colors.
Argentina’s win was also celebrated in neighboring India, where it is cricket that is typically worshipped with near-religious fervor.

In Kolkata city, where children are also named after football players from previous generations, Argentina fans marched in streets chanting songs for Messi's team. It’s a city where murals of Messi adorn the walls and Argentinian flags peek out of balconies with homes advertising their support.
Argentina has a legion of passionate super fans in Bangladesh and India since the days of Maradona, one of the greatest to play the game and an icon to fans around the world. Already, thousands of them have traveled to Qatar to see Messi and his team play.
Seeing its team getting massive support from the south Asian country, Argentina’s soccer federation earlier this month praised Bangladeshis on social media.
“Thank you for supporting our team. You are as crazy as we are!” the federation said in a Twitter post with photos showing Bangladeshi fans wearing Argentina’s jersey.
Those who aren’t in Qatar are displaying their allegiance by following the games with utmost devotion at home.
In southern Kerala's coastal towns and villages, where flags of Argentina and Brazil are strung across shops, buildings and flagpoles, people have erected huge foam-board cutouts of their favorite players. Messi — and Brazil's Neymar — are the favorites. In villages, open spaces have been used for match screenings, with thousands flocking to watch the games on giant screens.
On Sunday, Argentina will meet with either France or Morocco in the final. The fervor would reach its peak in India, and Aditya Shriram is waiting for a fairytale swan song for Messi.
Shriram, a 33-year-old digital marketer in New Delhi, has been supporting Argentina since the 1998 World Cup. On Sunday, he will be watching the final with a group of nearly two dozen friends he grew up with playing soccer in the Indian capital.

Shriram said Sunday’s game will have Messi play to seal his legacy, considering the greatest of all time — Pele and Maradona — have both won the World Cup, an accolade that had so far evaded the Argentinian superstar.
“It’ll complete him,” Shriram said. “Unless you win the World Cup, you can’t be counted among the absolute greatest of all time.”
Morocco face France in politically charged World Cup semifinal
Hind Sabouni bristles with pride as she recalls her country's history-making World Cup run as it eliminated one European soccer powerhouse and former colonial power after another — Belgium, Spain and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal — to become the first African and Arab nation to reach the semifinals.
For the 26-year-old English teacher in Morocco's capital, and many of her countrymen both inside the North African nation and throughout the diaspora, it's about to get more complicated. Next up is France: The defending champion and Morocco’s former colonial ruler for much of the first half of the 20th century.
Wednesday’s match has political and emotional resonance for both nations. It dredges up everything that’s complex about the relationship in which France still wields considerable economic, political and cultural influence.
“This game is one of a kind,” Sabouni said. “Especially since France is next to beat.”
“We can show the rest of the world that Morocco is no longer France’s backyard."
For the former protectorate, the match against the defending champion is an opportunity to show that Morocco is a formidable foe — on the soccer pitch at least — even though immigration between the two countries has blurred the lines for many in France and Morocco about who to support Wednesday in Qatar.

Over the past decade, Morocco’s relationship with France has changed. Sabouni said her generation of Moroccans is tired of France’s dominance. Young Moroccans, she said, “speak English instead of French, they buy more American products than French ones and even those who want to seek a better life abroad try to avoid France.”
“Even though this is just a football game, some people view it as an opportunity for revenge,” Sabouni said.
But not everyone.
Kenza Bartali, a communications professional in Rabat, sees no political overtones to the match. She obtained her master's degree in France, and lived for two years in Paris and the southern cities of Nice and Toulon between 2016 and 2018. She made “wonderful friends" who are still her friends today. “Most Moroccan students were treated with respect," the 26-year-old said.
Still, there is no doubt which team she's supporting.
“I sincerely hope that Morocco advances to the final,” Bartali said. “I am aware that it will be difficult because France is a very good team, but we are hoping for the best.”
Sabouni's sentiments resonate with Moroccans and other North Africans in France. Although the younger generation of immigrants and their descendants appear to be more at ease with multiple identities and languages in France, they still face institutional discrimination, racial and ethnic prejudice in public life, economic hardship and lack of job opportunities.
As in previous World Cups, France once again has turned to their national soccer team made up of players from diverse backgrounds as evidence that the country has indeed become a melting pot despite lurking prejudice, stoked against immigrants by elected right-wing politicians.
“Cultural changes and changes in life on the ground do have an effect and the team represents that,” said Laurent Dubois, a professor at University of Virginia in Charlottesville who has authored two books on French and international soccer.

“The way the players inhabit being French and don’t seem to have an issue with also being African or anything else at the same time is an antidote to the immigrant resentment on the right.”
In Morocco, people have embraced the team's foreign-born players as their native sons. They welcome the experience and professionalism they bring from Europe's top clubs and are proud they chose Morocco as their national team when they could have played for the countries of their births, from Spain to Canada to Belgium and beyond.
The Morocco national team depends heavily on the diaspora, with 14 of the squad’s 26 players born abroad, including their French-born coach, Walid Regragui, the highest proportion for any team at the World Cup.
Like Morocco’s supporters at home and an estimated 5 million scattered around Europe and beyond, many players grapple with family tales of colonial history, the challenges of immigration and questions of national loyalty. They want desperately to detach from the burdens of the past and win a place in the World Cup final — whether home for them is in France or Morocco, or Belgium, Canada, Tunisia, Algeria or elsewhere.
“Most of the Moroccan players who were born abroad chose Morocco as their national team because they feel they play for more than just to win a football match,” said Maher Mezahi, a Marseille-based Algerian journalist covering African football. “They play to elevate national pride and to make their family proud."
For Regragui, his and his player's dual identities are meaningless in the biggest match the squad has faced.
“I’m a dual national, and that’s an honor and a pleasure,” the Moroccan coach said. “And it’s an honor and a pleasure to face France. But I’m the Morocco coach and we’re going to be playing the best team in the world. The most important thing is to get through to the final.”
“When we play for the Moroccan national team, we are Moroccans,” Regragui said.
Motherly love boosts Morocco’s team spirit at World Cup
Morocco’s players are sharing the World Cup spotlight with some of their most ardent fans: their mothers.
Many of the players have brought their mothers and other family members to Qatar and celebrated with them in the stadiums after the team’s impressive string of victories.
Midfielder Sofiane Boufal was dancing with his mother on the field after Morocco beat Portugal 1-0 on Saturday to become the first African and Arab nation to reach the World Cup semifinals. They held hands and danced in circles to the delight of the crowd.

Defender Achraf Hakimi posted images on social media of his mother giving him a kiss on the cheek after he scored the winning penalty against Spain in the round of 16 last week. “I love you mom,” he wrote.
Even coach Walid Regragui has been celebrating with his mother, climbing into the stands after the Spain match to embrace her among jubilant Morocco fans.
“We represent Morocco, so we have an image that we have to spread around the world,” the coach said Tuesday. “And because the World Cup is the best shop window, if you like, we want to show our players and how close they are to their families. That’s part of our culture, it’s where we’re from.”
Regragui said bringing the families to the World Cup was part of the team’s strategy to perform at the highest level.
“We thought about this with the staff and we thought about details like bringing in our family members to try to build team spirit and that helped us go far in this tournament,” he said.

Morocco faces defending champion France in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Midfielder Ilias Chair said the support from the families means everything to the team.
“My parents and my wife have come ... and I think all the other players have their parents and family members here as well,” he said Tuesday. “And that has given us great strength, and I hope it continues that way, because if you look at the films, at the videos after the game of players with their parents, it’s fantastic. And you see people with tears in their eyes.”
‘To finish this way is brilliant’: Messi’s last dance, last chance for World Cup glory
Lionel Messi has declared that the final on Sunday will be his last appearance in a World Cup match.
In Tuesday’s (Qatar time) 3-0 semi-final victory over Croatia, the 35-year-old Argentina captain assisted on two goals and scored his fifth goal of Qatar World Cup 2022.
Messi is competing in his fifth World Cup, but he has never taken home the World Cup trophy.

He was quoted by the BBC as saying: “I am very happy for finishing my journey in World Cups in a final, to play the last game in a final. That is really very gratifying.”
Messi further said, “Everything that I lived in this World Cup has been emotional, seeing how much it has been enjoyed in Argentina… There are a lot of years from this year to the next one. I don’t think I will be able to do that. To finish this way is brilliant.”
Messi will make his 26th appearance in the World Cup when Argentina plays either France or Morocco in the championship game.

Mexico, Canada, and the United States will host the 2026 World Cup, the BBC report adds.
Messi has been named FIFA Best Men’s Player once and received record seven Ballon d’Or awards.
In addition, he has won four Champions League trophies.
The one obvious omission is the World Cup, when Argentina lost to Germany in the 2014 championship game.

Messi, who resigned from international service in June 2016 before changing his mind two months later, said, “We are going to do our best, as we have done up until now, so that this time it really happens – we really win it.”
Along with Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthaus, Rafa Marquez, Andres Guardado, and Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, a player for Paris Saint-Germain, is one of just six players to have participated in five World Cups.
Messi, who is now tied for the tournament's top scorer in Qatar with Kylian Mbappe of France, became the first player from Argentina to score in four World Cups and set a new record for the nation with 11 goals. At the age of 18, he made his Argentine debut in 2005. He has 97 goals in 172 appearances.

Every time you see Messi play it's a huge source of motivation for Argentinians: Scaloni
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said his team would enjoy muted celebrations after reaching the World Cup final with a 3-0 victory over Croatia on Tuesday.
Julian Alvarez scored a brace and Lionel Messi converted a penalty as Argentina won their fifth consecutive match at this tournament after starting with a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia.
"We'll celebrate because we know it's exciting to advance to the final," Scaloni said after the semifinal. "But we still have one step ahead of us. It's a historic moment that we need to enjoy but that's it. We need to focus on the upcoming match."

Scaloni heaped praise on Messi, who now has five goals and three assists at this tournament. His strike here saw him surpass Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina's all-time leading World Cup scorer with 11 goals.
"Of course we say that Messi is [the best player ever] and maybe we are narrow-minded because as an Argentine, it's enjoyable. But I have no doubt that he is the best," he said.
"I have been saying it for a long time. I'm honored to see him train and play. It's exciting because every time you see him play it's a huge source of motivation for Argentinians. It's a privilege to have him in our squad."

Scaloni also thanked the tens of thousands of Argentinian fans present at Lusail stadium, many of whom began singing hours before the 10pm kick-off and finished well beyond midnight.
"I have the dream job of all Argentines," he said. "Our people were supporting us throughout and you could feel it. It was unforgettable. We're all pushing in the same direction and we're grateful for to them."

France and Morocco will meet at Al Bayt Stadium on December 15 at 1 AM Bangladesh time.
France vs Morocco: Head-to-Head Records So Far
Hakim Ziyech’s team became the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. This time the biggest obstacle in front of them is the current world champion France. Let’s take a look at the statistics of these two teams before the semi-final battle.
The first question that will come to everyone’s mind is who is ahead in the fight between these two teams in the World Cup. The answer is that this is the first time these two teams are facing each other in the World Cup. Although the Moroccan national team started in 1955, these two teams have not met in the World Cup until now. And now we are seeing them in a time where they can make history if they win.
Although they have not met in the World Cup, these two teams have met 11 times in international football, where France is quite ahead. In their eleven meetings, France won 7 matches, Moroccans won one, and three matches were drawn. However, Morocco won its first appearance in 1963.
Meanwhile, France and Morocco have faced each other in various minor tournaments. France has won every time there. The last time these two teams faced each other was in 2007. However, it was a 2-2 draw. But this time the stage is different. And in this World Cup, Morocco’s strength is also very evident.

Performance of France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup So Far
France was one of the 13 teams that played in the inaugural World Cup in 1930. With this, France has appeared in the 16 World Cup and won the cup two times. Except for the loss to Tunisia in the group stage, France’s Qatar World Cup journey was very smooth.
After beating Poland in the round of 16, they faced a strong team, England, in the quarter-final. However, that match was moderately easy, too; they won by a 2-1 goal. Both teams fought hard in the heavyweight match of the quarter-finals. However, the entire responsibility for England’s loss to France should be on the captain Harry Kane. In the 84th minute of the match, England trailed by 2-1 goals. And just at that moment, England got a penalty. Earlier, Kane equalized England by scoring from the spot kick. However, Kane missed the second penalty, and they had to leave the World Cup.
But the French team is at an excellent pace. France’s attacking trio is in rhythm. Kylian Mbappe with 5 goals tops the list of highest goal scorers. Expert striker Olivier Giroud scored 4 goals, including the quarter-final winning goal against England. Forward Antoine Griezmann is playing great despite not seeing a goal so far. He assisted two goals in a 2-1 win against the English.
France has no injury update, and no player is missing the game. So, they will start the match with the main squad.
France’s players to watch
Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud, Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Morocco's Performance in the FIFA 2022 World Cup So Far
Meanwhile, in addition to being undefeated in the World Cup, Morocco has conceded only one goal. That, too, was an own goal against Canada. As a result, there is no opportunity to question Morocco’s defense. They went to the last sixteen as the group’s best and sent off the 2010 World Cup champion Spain in a penalty shootout. After that, they beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s team Portugal by 1-0 at the scheduled time and booked their ticket to the semis.
But Morocco may fall behind in the field from one side. And that is the experience of not playing in the semi-finals on such a world stage. Where France is playing in the semi-final for the seventh time in the World Cup. However, the ‘Giant Destroyer’ Moroccans have already proved that they have the ability to send off another strong team. Their excellent defensive performance has contributed greatly to Morocco’s unprecedented success.
Morocco’s main strength is their defensive understanding, above all, the mental acuity to use their plans on the field. Rather than defense, however, Morocco will look to Sofyan Amrabat to keep France’s midfield inactive. Essentially Amravati will need to flare up one more to stop Griezmann. Along with that, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s great form will keep them ahead mentally.
Romain Saiss’s injury could be a concern for Morocco. If he doesn’t return, there won’t be much chance to stop Giroud. Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui may be able to handle Mbappe and Dembele in the pace game in two wings. However, if Giroud can commit a few passes in the match to either of them, then danger will appear in Morocco’s defense.
Morocco’s players to watch
Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi, and Yassine Bounou.
