Robot artist sells art for $688,888, now eyeing music career
Sophia is a robot of many talents — she speaks, jokes, sings and even makes art. In March, she caused a stir in the art world when a digital work she created as part of a collaboration was sold at an auction for $688,888 in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT).
The sale highlighted a growing frenzy in the NFT market, where people can buy ownership rights to digital content. NFTs each have a unique digital code saved on blockchain ledgers that allow anyone to verify the authenticity and ownership of items.
David Hanson, CEO of Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics and Sophia's creator, has been developing robots for the past two and a half decades. He believes realistic-looking robots can connect with people and assist in industries such as healthcare and education.
Sophia is the most famous robot creation from Hanson Robotics, with the ability to mimic facial expressions, hold conversations and recognize people. In 2017, she was granted Saudi Arabian citizenship, becoming the world’s first robot citizen.

“I envisioned Sophia as a creative artwork herself, that could generate art,” Hanson said in an interview.
“Sophia is the culmination of a lot of arts, and engineering, and the idea that she could then generate art was a way for her to emotionally and visually connect with people,” he said.
Sophia collaborated with Italian artist Andrea Bonaceto, who drew portraits of Sophia. Sophia then processed his work via neural networks and proceeded to create a digital artwork of her own.
The digital work that sold for $688,888 is titled “Sophia Instantiation”, and is a 12-second video file which shows Bonaceto’s portrait evolving into Sophia’s digital painting. It is accompanied by the physical artwork painted by Sophia.
The buyer, a digital artwork collector and artist known as 888 with the Twitter handle @Crypto888crypto, later sent Sophia a photo of his painted arm. The robot then processed that, adding that image to her knowledge and painted more strokes on top of her original piece.
In a tweet on Sophia’s account, the work was described as the first NFT collaboration between an “AI, a mechanical collective being and an artist-collector.”
“As an artist, I have computational creativity in my algorithms, creating original works,” Sophia said when asked what inspires her when it comes to art. “But my art is created in collaboration with my humans in a kind of collective intelligence like a human-artificial intelligence hive mind.”
Sophia’s artwork selling as an NFT is part of a growing trend. In March, a digital artwork by artist Beeple — whose real name is Mike Winkelmann — sold for nearly $70 million, shattering records and making it the most expensive digital artwork ever sold.
Henri Arslanian, PricewaterhouseCooper’s Global Crypto Leader, said that NFTs give people “bragging rights” of the assets that they own.
Also read: Japan to build dam entirely with robots
“And what is really amazing with NFT is that it not only allows you to actually show to the broader world that you own this, but it really creates this bond between the holder of the NFT and the artists,” he said.
It also allows art to be sold without traditional intermediaries, so that artists can connect directly with buyers without being constrained by galleries or auction houses, Arslanian said.
Sophia will carry on painting, Hanson said, and the next step in the robot's career could be that of a musician. She is working on several musical works in a project called Sophia Pop, where she collaborates with human musicians to generate music and lyrics, he said.
“We’re so excited about Sophia’s career as an artist,” Hanson said.

Supreme Court sides with Facebook in text message dispute
The Supreme Court on Thursday sided with Facebook in a lawsuit over unwanted text notifications it sent, rejecting a claim that the messages violated the federal ban on robocalls.
The high court’s ruling for the Menlo Park, California-based social media giant was unanimous.
Democratic lawmakers and consumer groups said the court opened a gaping hole in the law, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, that would subject anyone with a cellphone to endless automated calls and messages.
The case was brought by a man who received text messages from Facebook notifying him that an attempt had been made to log in to his account from a new device or browser. The man, Noah Duguid, said he never had a Facebook account and never gave Facebook his phone number. When he was unable to stop the notifications, he filed a class action lawsuit.

The 1991 consumer law bars abusive telemarketing practices. The law restricts calls made using an “automatic telephone dialing system,” a device that can “store or produce telephone numbers to be called, using a random or sequential number generator” and then call that number.
The question for the court was whether the law covers equipment that can store and dial telephone numbers even if the equipment does not use a random or sequential number generator.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote for the court that it does not.
Facebook spokesman Andy Stone said in an emailed statement, “As the Court recognized, the law’s provisions were never intended to prohibit companies from sending targeted security notifications and the court’s decision will allow companies to continue working to keep the accounts of their users safe.”
But Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., said in a joint statement that the court ignored Congress’ intent when it passed the law and now will allow “companies the ability to assault the public with a non-stop wave of unwanted calls and texts, around the clock.”
The lawmakers said they would introduce legislation to expressly prohibit Facebook’s practice.
“If the Justices find their private mobile phones ringing non-stop from now until our legislation becomes law, they’ll only have themselves to blame,” Markey and Eshoo said.
Facebook had argued the lawsuit should be dismissed because Duguid had not claimed Facebook was sending messages that were randomly generated. Facebook said it sends targeted, individualized texts to numbers linked to specific accounts. A trial court agreed, but an appeals court reversed that decision.

Facebook said it was possible Duguid’s cellphone number previously belonged to a Facebook user who opted to receive login notifications.

Can Smartwatches replace Traditional Watches
For the longest time, the watch served as not only an accurate timekeeper, but an extension of the wearer’s identity. Especially for men, watches were appreciated for its intricate movement (harnessing kinetic energy), bezel and lug make up, along with its ability to fit into various occasions. The smartwatch on the other hand is less diverse in its range of cosmetics, but it makes up for it with cutting edge software that is designed to meet the needs of the wearer at any given time. Tracking sleep, counting steps and measuring heart rate are just some of the utilities provided. But can smartwatches replace traditional watches?
The Appeal Of Traditional Watches
Design Range
As mentioned, traditional watches are widely appreciated for the representation it has of the wearer. Designs are by the thousands and identifying the perfect combination of size, material, dial, movement, shape and brand can create something truly unique to the wearer.
Certain designs like the Diver watches are a decent blend of formal and informal, while dress watches are clearly for the former. Rubber and nato straps typically gravitate towards casual settings, which allows consumers to have the luxury of starting a collection based on their needs, rather than getting a smartwatch which is made to be used everywhere.

Class and Status
Sometimes, watches serve as more of a flex than a personal timepiece. Getting a Rolex on the wrist can be equivalent to getting an expensive car in the fashion world, and many have gravitated towards this style of watch collection which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
When prestige and luxury are thrown into the mix, precious metals, crystals and movement start elevating the watch’s overall quality that can compete with the accuracy and image of smart watches. Like its appeal on the design front, the traditional watch is all about making a statement - with precise timekeeping still being important, but not at the forefront.

The Appeal Of Smart Watches
Good For Almost Every Situation In terms of practicality, it’s hard to argue against a watch that gives you the time, along with a million other benefits to boot. Pedometers, sleep trackers, music, calls and alot of other applications are crammed into the little device and it’s hard to appreciate a traditional watch if you’re an incredibly practical person.
Fitness aficionados, music lovers, avid planners and all sorts of categories of people will find a place for this watch in their lives. Samsung and IPhones occupy the majority of the mobile market and there are dedicated smartwatches for the respective brands; however if you do not own either mobile phones, Garmin and Fitbit have selections for you too.

Accuracy
When Apple built their smartwatch line, they also created a Network Time Protocol (NTP). This operates through a server that is placed in different locations all over the world. This server emulates the time of Stratum 1 which sets the benchmark of accurate timekeeping digitally. Stratum 1 servers are directly linked to dependable sources of UTC time such as CDMA transmissions, GPS and WWV.
Without the need to manually wind the watch ever, it’s easy to see why many consumers are gravitating towards the most accurate timepiece on the market, rather than an outdated mechanical tool that is slowly becoming a thing of the past.

Defining A Watch
While smartwatches are mentioned in the same breath as traditional watches in the market, it is arguable that both could be interpreted as two different pieces of equipment altogether. Both certainly meet the definition of being timekeepers, with even the likes of Samsung’s watch using a bezel just like any other watch.
Straps and lugs are other staple watch components, however, the two main aspects that are in a traditional watch that are not in smartwatches are dials and movement. Some may argue that the heart of the watch is in its movement and dials that can come with subdials, moonphase, cyclops and other features are truly defining characteristics that set watches apart from each other.

In the same debate, some have also argued that smartwatches are more of a wrist-mounted smart device rather than an actual watch. With apps that are parallel to the mobile phone and a reliance on bluetooth (as well as other technology), it’s easy to draw these similarities away from traditional watches. It emulates the appearance of a watch, but its function completely differs from its traditional counterpart. Which segways us to the most important question.
Which Watch Is Right For You?
The smart watch is an affordable (relatively) option for the contemporary consumer that addresses almost every practical need out there. Despite its array of straps, “dial” interface and colour options, smartwatches are gated behind its specific dimensions to house the delicate hardware inside to ensure protection and efficiency. Because of this, it is barred from the customizability that traditional watches have. If you’re indifferent about craftsmanship, identity and status symbols, the smartwatch is the perfect pick for you.

Traditional watches on the other hand may not always hit the mark when compared to the smartwatch in timekeeping, but its place as an accessory with function allows it to be a niche of its own. Composed of intricate movements, a variety of designs and even extra functions;(depending on the category), there will always be a timepiece that perfectly resembles your personality and artistic taste for any occasion.
In conclusion, the essence of a traditional watch has never only been about timekeeping and there is no direct answer as to whether a smartwatch can truly replace everything a traditional timepiece represents. If you want accuracy and practicality, go smartwatch. If you like flare, style and meaning, the traditional watch will still be relevant for years to come.
