Apple's iPhone 14 Review: A revamped iPhone 13?
There aren’t many phones that command the same level of global attention as the iPhone does. The iPhone 14 series was launched on September 7th, 2022. Does the Apple iPhone 14 go for a big leap forward? Or is it just another incremental update? Let’s find out.
Key Specifications of Apple iPhone 14
Design and Build Quality
This year, the iPhone has scrapped its mini lineup as leaks and rumors suggested. Instead, users got a Plus variant of the device which has a similar dimension to the Pro Max with the internals of the 14.
Coming back to the iPhone 14, the design and build quality remains exactly the same here. Dimension-wise, the device is about 0.1 mm thicker than the iPhone 13 at 7.8 mm thickness. The change is almost impossible to notice in day-to-day use. And while this might feel like a design stagnation, there is more to it than the obvious.
Read iPhone 14 launch: What are the new features?
We spoke about how high-end ultra tech is coming at a saturation point and how it’s impossible to introduce breakthrough features in every generation.
The iPhone 13 series was the pinnacle of technology last year. And even though we have moved a year forward, the design and the internals are still relevant by 2022 standards.
Users will be getting the exact same external ports and button selection on the iPhone 14. However, the USA variant of the device has introduced a dual e-sim option. Meaning there won’t be any physical sim slot on the USA variant of the device.
Read Oppo A57 Review: Key specs, pros and cons
Other region-specific models will feature physical sim slots with the Chinese variant featuring a dual nano sim option instead of the e-sim.
Overall, the iPhone 14 brings nothing new on the hardware end of things. And while it might sound boring, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Why fix something that isn’t broken?
Display
The replicative nature from last year has trickled into the display of the iPhone 14 as well. As expected from the hardware dimensions, the display of the iPhone 14 is the exact same 6.1-inch panel found on the iPhone 13.
Read Top 10 mobile phones coming to Bangladesh in September 2022
The display itself is a Super Retina XDR OLED panel from Apple. If the name wasn’t mouthful enough, the panel itself has been absolutely stacked with features. It supports HDR 10 content along with Dolby Vision. In High Brightness Mode, the display can churn out up to 800 nits with a peak brightness of up to 1200 nits.
This makes the panel easily legible outdoors even under direct sunlight. The front is protected by scratch-resistant ceramic glass along with an oleophobic coating to keep smudges and fingerprints away.
The display of iPhones has always been top-notch. They are the only other brand that can directly compete with Samsung in terms of color, quality, and overall dynamics. The panel itself has excellent viewing angles, vivid colors, and a very responsive touch sampling.

Overall, even though there’s nothing new on display tech, it's still one of the best displays in any budget range right now.
Camera
The iPhone 14 features a dual 12 MP camera on the back. Seeing the 12 MP main sensor on the 14 might be a letdown for many as the iPhone has finally upgraded the main sensor to a 48 MP one on the Pro models.
The camera system on the 14 is exactly the same with albeit slightly better performance. The performance upgrade comes from the software optimization of the iOS 16 and general post-processing optimization.
Read iPhone 14 launch: Game-changing emergency services via satellite
The main sensor still features dual-pixel PDAF as well as a sensor shifting OIS which aids in the insane video stabilization on the iPhone 14.
The picture quality is still much superior to any competitor in its price bracket. The colors look sharp with a detailed dynamic range no matter what the lighting condition is. The variable shutter speed allows for smoother low and extreme low light images. Users would be hard-pressed to find grains or noises in artificial or low-light images.
Moving on to the videography, the phone can shoot at 4K at 60 fps in max settings. But the most impressive feature is the cinematic mode which hyper stabilizes videos to provide cinema-like video projections.
Read Android 14 to feature satellite connectivity support
The front camera is also the standard 12 MP like last year. The pictures look great with their details and sharpness. The cinematic mode has also been added to the front camera which is the only notable upgrade here.
Overall, the camera will churn out a bit more than last year’s iPhone 13. And no matter how you look at it, it's still an excellent camera system in its price bracket.
Processor and Performance
Perhaps the most shocking aspect regarding the iPhone 14 is the use of A 15 Bionic chipset, the same that was used on last year’s iPhone 13 and 13 Pro series.
Read International Roaming: How to use a Bangladeshi SIM card abroad
We have seen before that both the pro and the non-pro variant get the same processing power. But with the 14 series, Apple is creating a clear distinction in terms of processing power as well.
While the Pro series comes with a more enhanced A 16 Bionic, users opting for the cheaper 14 series will only be getting A 15. And much of that has to do with performance and global chip shortage rather than just a strategic move.
Over the years, Apple has produced chipsets that are far superior to any competitor in the market by a clear margin. And the gap has only widened in recent years with the Bionic series. So even though A 15 might seem like last year’s chip, it'll be powerful enough to power through anything that’s thrown at it.
Read Top 8 International Sim Cards in Bangladesh
The 5 Nm Hexa-core processor used 2 high-powered chips and supported 4 mid-tier chips. On paper, the A 15 falls slightly short of the A 16. Apple claims that the A 15 is still better than any android competitor chipset released in 2022 so users shouldn’t worry much about the performance.
You’ll get the same lighting, fast performance, smooth animations, and a proven chipset that can blaze through even the most demanding tasks.
Battery and Charge Time
the iPhone's battery amount isn’t the best indicator of its performance. Even though the iPhone 14 features a 3279 mAh battery, the high optimization of the A 15 allows the device to run for 8 to 10 hours continually. The device also has fast charging capabilities which can go from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes with supported fast chargers.

Price of iPhone 14
The base variant of the iPhone 14 with 128 storage options comes at 799 USD which roughly translates to 83,458 BDT ( 1 USD = 104.45). However, the pricing may vary depending on supply tax and other policies when it becomes available in Bangladesh.
Final Words
Like every year, Apple’s September event 2022 has been designated to launch the latest iPhone series. But with tech reaching a saturation point, it’s becoming increasingly difficult, even for Apple, to come up with a notable and significant upgrade.
The iPhone 14 doesn’t really bring anything new to the iPhone lineup. In fact, the device is like a repackaged version of last year’s iPhone 13. While many might think of this as Apple becoming complacent, it still brings an overall package that can hardly be beaten at its price point. Speaking of price, it’s the same as last year so that’s another thing to consider as well.

Overall, the Apple iPhone 14 might feel like the same run-off-the-mill iPhone. But for anyone wishing to jump to iOS or upgrade from anything before iPhone 11, now’s the perfect time to grab an iPhone 14.

Walton Primo HM7 Review: Midrange processor in ultra-budget device
Walton, the largest tech brand in Bangladesh started their journey in the mobile handset market in the late 2000s. Back then, the company didn’t have any production capability and used to import Chinese feature phones and rebrand them under their banner.
Over the years, the company set up plants, and R&D units and ventured into the smartphone market. Needless to say, Walton is one of the key brands operating in the budget segment of smartphones in Bangladesh.
Their latest offering, the Primo HM7 brings a lot of the budget and performance under its hood. Here’s our detailed take on the device.

Key Specifications of Walton Primo HM7
Design and Build Quality
The design of the Primo HM7 can be called generic at best. Walton didn’t try to reinvent the wheel or adopt a new design theme altogether. Rather the design is a mix of existing standards that are commonly seen in the budget segment.
The device is made of plastic all around with a glass front. There is no rating on the glass panel so durability isn’t guaranteed.
The back of the device features a textured design that feels great in the hand. But that doesn’t take away the device's cheap plastic feel. Ports and button selections are as usual. Users will get a Type-C port along with the headphone jack which is a refreshing change in the ultra-budget segment. There is a physical fingerprint scanner on the back which is another useful addition.
Read Oppo A57 Review: Key specs, pros and cons
However, the loudspeaker has been removed from the bottom to the back. While this design choice is something new, it muffles the sound output when the phone is put on its back. The problem is even more apparent on the HM 7 as it features only a single loudspeaker.
Overall, the design and the build quality don’t move away from the budget segment. But considering the price of the device, the room for complaints is also very slim.
The Display
The Prime HM 7 features a 6.52-inch 720P IPS LCD panel. The display is relatively large considering some of the other competitors in the market but the 720P resolution choice almost seems to be universal.
Read Vivo V25 Pro: Detailed Review with Key Specifications
Speaking of the quality of the display, it is nothing eye-catching. This is another generic 720P panel that gets relatively bright outdoors for easy visibility. The viewing angles are okay as there are no weird color shifts.
The tone of the display is on the warmer side. It tends to make the color pop which gives it a much-needed sharpness.
But there is a problem as well. while scrolling, the display sometimes fails to recognize the touch. Now whether this is a hardware or software issue is something only Walton can tell. But more often than not users will have to press a bit harder to get a touch registered. And this might be a deal breaker for many.

The Camera
There is a triple camera setup on the Primo HM 7. The main sensor is a 13 MP one with an additional 2 MP depth sensor and a 2 MP macro shooter.
The additional sensors won’t be of much use as they are mostly included to increase the sensor count. Most of the work is done by the main sensor and the performance here is average at best.
The camera can take decent shots in direct sunlight or well-lit conditions. The images are passable as they can capture the details of the subject but softens or underexposes the surrounding.
Read Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 Review: Multitasking King for Utilitarian Users
Moving to artificial lights or dark environments, the photo quality degrades further. So much so that there are color imbalances at places and the overall photo looks much softer with exposure issues.
The story is somewhat the same with portrait mode as the edge detection is sometimes a hit or miss. There is an 8 MP selfie shooter which also performs average at best. The videography is limited to 1080P at 30 fps without any kind of stabilization features.
The HM 7 is a budget-oriented device. So any kind of shortcoming is understandable as the device won't compete against the mid-range of flagship devices. But even then, the cameras underperform compared to similar devices in this price range.

Processor and Performance
The Primo HM 7 comes with a Unisoc Tiger T610 processor. While Unisoc SoCs aren’t all that common, the T610 is a surprisingly powerful choice given the budget constraint of the HM 7.
The processor is powered by an Octa-core 1.8 GHz processor based on a 12 Nm Finfet architecture.
Truth be told, this exact processor has been featured before in many higher-priced devices. So to see it on the HM 7 is a reassuring sign.
Read Asus ROG Phone 6 Review: Pros, cons of the hardcore gaming beast
Speaking of performance, the processor can easily handle day-to-day tasks. Users shouldn’t have any problem browsing the net or social media with this phone. But the phone starts to falter with demanding tasks.
This device can be used for gaming too, moderate gaming that is. Titles like Asphalt 9 and PUBG will run on moderate settings but even then it heats the device pretty hard with a strong battery drain.
Overall, the processor gets the job done and might be the best selling point of the Primo HM7.
Read Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Review: Is this flip phone worth buying?
Battery and Charge Time
The Primo HM7 comes with a 4900 mAh battery onboard. While this is not much, it tends to fare pretty well against an entry-level processor. Users can expect to get around 8 to 10 hours of continued usage with this device.
Unfortunately, there is no fast charging on this device.
Price of Walton Primo HM7 in Bangladesh
Walton officially launched the Primo HM 7 in Bangladesh with a price tag of 10,500 BDT.
Final Words
The Walton Primo HM7 is the latest addition to a line of budget devices from Walton. Considering the demographic of Bangladesh, the consumer of the budget segment is much higher compared to mid-range or even flagship devices. As a result, the HM 7 might attract a lot of new phone buyers.
Read: Top 10 mobile phones coming to Bangladesh in September 2022
However, the phone could’ve done better in the display and the camera department. While the phone shines in the processor and performance, it is ultimately something that remains under the hood and isn’t the contact point for the users.
Other than that, the Walton Primo HM7 can be a great budget phone for around 10000 BDT.
Bezos' Blue Origin rocket crashes after liftoff, no one aboard
A rocket crashed back to Earth shortly after liftoff Monday in the first launch accident for Jeff Bezos’ space travel company, but the capsule carrying experiments managed to parachute to safety.
No one was aboard the Blue Origin flight, which used the same kind of rocket as the one that sends paying customers to the edge of space. The rockets are now grounded pending the outcome of an investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The New Shepard rocket was barely a minute into its flight from West Texas when bright yellow flames shot out from around the single engine at the bottom. The capsule’s emergency launch abort system immediately kicked in, lifting the craft off the top. Several minutes later, the capsule parachuted onto the remote desert floor.
The rocket came crashing down, with no injuries or damage reported, said the FAA, which is in charge of public safety during commercial space launches and landings.

Blue Origin's launch commentary went silent when the capsule catapulted off the rocket Monday morning, eventually announcing: “It appears we've experienced an anomaly with today's flight. This wasn't planned."
“Booster failure on today’s uncrewed flight. Escape system performed as designed,” the Kent, Washington-based company tweeted close to an hour later.
The company later said the rocket crashed.
The mishap occurred as the rocket was traveling nearly 700 mph (1,126 kph) at an altitude of about 28,000 feet (8,500 meters). There was no video shown of the rocket — only the capsule — after the failure. It happened around the point the rocket is under the maximum amount of pressure, called max-q.

The rocket usually lands upright on the desert floor and then is recycled for future flights.
The webcast showed the capsule reaching a maximum altitude of more than 37,000 feet (11,300 meters). Thirty-six experiments were on board to be exposed to a few minutes of weightlessness. Half were sponsored by NASA, mostly from students.
It was the 23rd flight for the New Shepard program, named after the first American in space, Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard. It was the ninth flight for this particular rocket-capsule pair, which was dedicated to flying experiments.
Blue Origin's most recent flight with paying customers was just last month; the ticket price hasn’t been released. Bezos was on the first New Shepard crew last year. Altogether, Blue Origin has carried 31 people on 10-minute flights, including actor William Shatner.
The rocket should have launched nearly two weeks ago, but was grounded until Monday by bad weather.

Japan needs young engineers, Bangladeshi ICT professionals can fill that gap
Bangladesh and Japan can develop “ICT bridges” as the latter faces shortage of young ICT engineers, says a Japanese expert.
“The two countries can support each other. I hope young Bangladeshis go to Japan and have some experience… It is not a one-way support,” Dr Kano Tsuyoshi, co-founder and CEO of ICT for Development (NPO), Japan, told UNB today.
Responding to a question, Dr Kano, also an associate professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Japan said he is eager to support young Bangladeshi ICT engineers.

While talking to this correspondent at Jatiya Press Club (JPC), the Japanese expert said digital human resources are one of the important factors for the ICT sector’s development in Bangladesh.
“Digital human resources in Bangladesh can be ICT bridges between the country and Japan,” said the Japanese expert.
He said if young Bangladeshi professionals go to Japan and come back to Bangladesh after 10 to 20 years, both countries will be benefitted.
Dr Kano said Japan has a big challenge — shortage of ICT engineers — because it is becoming an “aging society” and the number of young people is inadequate.

“Young ICT engineers are not many in Japan,” he said, adding that in Bangladesh, many young people do not get jobs immediately after graduation, even in the ICT sector, due to lack of required skills.
The Japanese expert said these two challenges — shortage of ICT engineers in Japan and shortage of good jobs in Bangladesh — can be addressed through cooperation and collaboration.
Dr Kano, who is visiting Bangladesh at the invitation of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japanese Embassy in Dhaka, is scheduled to leave Dhaka on Tuesday.

He said both soft and hard skills can be obtained through global experiences and the two countries can make ICT business relationships stronger.
The number of Japanese companies operating in Bangladesh has tripled in the past 10 years with an increased attention from ICT companies (offshoring, development center, recruitment, etc.).
On Sunday, he delivered a lecture on “ICT Bridge between Bangladesh and Japan” at ICT Division, joined by more than 100 people – government officials, industry people and students.

Ex-girlfriend selling gift, memorabilia from Elon Musk in auction
If your ex becomes the richest person in the world, keeping his possessions could turn advantageous in the future.
The ex-girlfriend of tech mogul Elon Musk is auctioning off a collection of pictures and other memorabilia from their relationship. The souvenirs are being sold by Musk’s college flame Jennifer Gwynne via the Boston-based RR Auction, reports CNN.
According to a press release RR Auction provided to CNN, Gwynne and Musk began dating in 1994 while they were both employed as resident counsellors in a university dormitory. Musk began a doctoral study at Stanford soon after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, but left to found his first firm, Zip2.

The collection includes souvenirs from Musk and Gwynne’s time together in addition to 18 candid pictures of the businessman when he was a baby-faced University of Pennsylvania economics student.
Before his quick ascent to fame, the billionaire appeared just like any other college student in the glossy images, hanging out with his fellow resident advisers, having fun in his dorm room, and cuddling with his fiancée.
A birthday necklace given to Gwynne on her birthday is the item with the current highest bid, followed by a signed birthday card, the CNN report adds.

The message reads, “Happy Birthday, Jennifer (aka Boo-Boo), Love, Elon.” Sunday morning's opening bid is almost $7,000, which is the most. According to RR, the card is anticipated to sell for more than $10,000.
The emerald in the gold necklace was mined in Zambia by Musk’s father Errol, a successful South African engineer and real estate entrepreneur.
Two photographs are also included with the necklace: one of Musk and Gwynne with the former’s mother, the model Maye Musk, and the other of them at a 1995 end-of-the-year formal.

iPhone 14 launch: What are the new features?
Apple has never stopped surprising the world with extraordinary features. On September 7, 2022, Apple launched their latest iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max variants differ significantly from the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models.
What’s new on Apple’s iPhone series
— Brighter display featuring Dynamic Island:
Apple claims that the bezels have been considerably decreased in the latest iPhone 14 models, but the sizes are once again 6.1 and 6.7 inches. The display is brighter than previous models’, with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.
In the latest iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max model, you get a pill-shaped "Dynamic Island" which has replaced the previous upper-display notch. This ‘Always-On’ display feature will not only allow the users to access controls with just a tap-and-hold; but also give quick access to crucial information.

Running on iOS 16, the Dynamic Island can show information like sports scores while running background activities like Maps, Music, or timer. Those who love multitasking shouldn’t miss it.
— Powerful cameras with Photonic Engine and auto focus selfie shooter:
The iPhone 14 and Plus models sport primary (f /1.5) and ultra-wide (f/2.4) cameras on the back but still have a 12-megapixel resolution. These sensors have been enhanced with a faster aperture.
The Pro versions, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, come with significant improvement in the camera section. A quad-pixel sensor with a 48-megapixel resolution (f/1.8) has been added to the primary camera, making it 65% bigger than the sensor in the iPhone 13 Pro.

Apple is utilizing the increased resolution for the company's ProRAW format as well as an additional step in the camera's zoom, which now includes a 2x option in addition to a 3x option. Furthermore, the telephoto (f/2.8) and ultra-wide (f/2.2) cameras have also been improved.
All the models of iPhone 14 series are blessed with a new feature called ‘Photonic Engine.’ This exclusive feature will create Deep Fusion before the photos are compressed. It will "dramatically" improve (49%) low-light performance of the iPhone model's cameras, including the selfie cameras.
