The arrestees were identified as Md Kamal Hossain alias GM Kamal, 23, and Al Amin, 30.
The elite force recently arrested PhD researcher Enamul Haque in connection with publishing fake news after creating fake websites, said Mohiuddin Faruqi, company commander of Rab-2, while addressing a press briefing.
As per the information gleaned from Enamul, a Rab team arrested Kamal from Mohammadpur area in the capital and Al-Amin, who hosted domain, from Tongi area of Gazipur city, he said.
The arrestees confessed that they used to create fake websites to earn more, the Rab official claimed.
The Rab team found the URLs of fake websites of the Prothom Alo, the Naya Diganta, bdtimes.com, Rokomari and some others in Kamal’s laptop and 19 fake websites in Amin’s laptop which they used to share fake news.
They used to copy news items from prominent news sites and fake main parts of the news. There was no scope for readers to detect whether the news was fake, Mohiuddin said, adding that they also spread fake and distorted news during the movement for safe roads.
The gang used to earn Tk 250 from per 1000 likes, he said. “Necessary steps will be taken under the Digital Security Act.”
