Dhaka, Sept 30 (UNB) – Reported gunfights in Maheshkhali and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’ Bazar district and Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district between police and ‘criminals’ early Sunday left a suspected terrorist and two drug peddlers dead.
In Cox’s Bazar, the suspected terrorist Mohammad KarimProkash, alias Mahmud Karim, son of Yusuf Ali and an accused in several cases, including that of murder and robbery, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at ShaplarDeba in in Maheshkhali,
On information, police conducted a drive in the area in the early morning, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, the ‘terrorists’ opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.
After the gunfight, police recovered the body of Karim from the spot.
Besides, suspected drug trader Imran HossainProkash, son of AzizulHaque of PaschimSikdarpara, was killed in what was said to be a gunfight with police in Dorgarchhora of Teknafupazila.
Tipped off that a gang of drug traders gathered in the area for Yaba trading, police conducted a drive there, said Ranjit Kumar Barua, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, the OC claimed, the drug traders made a gun attack on them, prompting them to fire back.
After the drug traders fled the scene, the police team spotted the bullet-hit body of Imran, the OC said.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight, he said.
Police recovered two firearms, some bullets and 7,000 Yaba pills from the spot.
In Narayanganj, a suspected drug peddler, Ali Noor, 50, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Chilarbag area in Sonargaon upazila.
Police arrested drug traders Ali Noor, accused in 25 drug related cases, and Masud Rana, 24, in a drive early Sunday.
Later, a team of police conducted another drive along with the arrestees in the area around 5:30am.
Sensing the presence of police in the area, Ali Noor’s cohorts opened fire them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight which left Noor dead on the spot.
The gang also snatched Masud from police custody.
Police recovered 300 Yaba tablets, one shooter gun, four round of bullets and 1 and half kg hemp from the spot.
