Rajshahi, Oct 16 (UNB) – A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced five BNP and JCD leaders to 10 years’ imprisonment in a case filed over an attack on the residences of the Awami League candidate in Chapainawabganj-1 constituency in the 2014 national election and his brother, in December, 2013.
The convicts are Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders Mrinal Hossain and Setaur Rahman, and Shariful Islam, Rabiul Islam and Yasir Arafat, local BNP leaders of Kansat in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.
Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar Roy passed the verdict.
The tribunal also fined each of the convicts Tk 10,000 and in case of failure to pay the penalty, they will have to suffer one more year in jail.
According to the prosecution, the convicts attacked and torched the residences of Md Golam Rabbani, AL candidate from Chapainawabganj-1 constituency, and his elder brother at Kansat Pukuria of Shibganj upazila on December 2 in 2013 before the January-5, 2014 general election.
