The University Teachers Association announced they would observe a two hour sit-in programme on the campus daily from Thursday, protesting irregularities in administrative activities and seeking implementation of their eight-point demand.
The sit-in will be held every day until their demands are met, said Abu Jafar Mia, general secretary of the association.
BU students have been staging demonstrations by putting up barricades on Barishal-Patuakhali highway since Wednesday morning and they also vowed to continue their protest unit their demand is met.
Communication between Barishal and Patuakhali, Barguna and Bhola districts remained suspended for 6 hours from 11am to 5pm due to the blockade.
Witnesses said the students took to the street around 11am after keeping the main gate of the academic building under lock and key. They also boycotted all classes and examinations.
On March 28, authorities shut down the university for an indefinite period amid student protests demanding withdrawal of the VC for his 'offensive' comment made while addressing a programme marking Independence Day on the campus.
The following day, VC Prof Imamul Huq expressed regret over his comment, saying it was misunderstood by the students. He stopped short of an apology.
On March 26, students started demonstrations claiming that the VC arranged the Independence Day programme on the campus without inviting students. During the programme, the VC reportedly labelled them as ‘sons of Razakars’. The embattled VC denies it was pointed at the students.
However, a meeting of the district administration, teachers and students decided to reopen the university on Sunday (April 7).
Meanwhile, the university authorities on Monday night permanently suspended its registrar Monirul Islam on charge of sexually harassing a female student.
The decision was taken in a syndicate meeting held in the capital.
In 2018, Monirul sexually harassed a job seeker. Later, a probe body formed by the university also found his involvement in the matter, said university VC Imamul Haque.
