Apart from digitising the cable television network of the country, Cable Operators’ Association of Bangladesh (COAB) on Tuesday demanded that it must be declared as a separate industry.
"The country's cable television network should be declared as an industry," said former Coab General Secretary Saiful Hossain Sohail while addressing a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club.
He also hoped that banks will provide loans to digitise the cable television network. "To make this sector digital, banks should offer low-interest loans," he said.
Saiful also demanded that technical facilities for digitisation of cable television network be increased. "Authorities should give us (operators) reasonable time to provide set top boxes at the customer level," he added.
Coab leaders opposed the statement of Information Minister Hasan Mahmud who recently said the government is losing Tk 10,000-12,000 crore in revenue annually because of non-digitialised cable television operators.
Coab also put forward a set of demands, including duty-free declaration on import of machinery related to cable television network and modernising the relevant laws.
