A group of students under the banner "General Students of DU” made these demands from a human chain at the base of the Aparajeo Bangla sculpture.
They urge the authorities to ensure their legitimate rights and secure a legal residential seat for each freshman.
Armanul Haque, a second-year student of International Relations department, said: “Some 30-40 students have to take shelter in a room which has capacity of 4-8 controlled by a specific student organization.”
“When the students do not get space for sleep at night, they go outside and get involved with crime instructed by their political seniors," he added.
Nahid Islam, a third-year student of Sociology department, claimed that the platforms for representing students’ concerns, the Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu), is still silent over solving accommodation crisis. He threatened to go for tougher movement if Ducsu fails to take any initiative regarding this.
Around 50 students from different departments including Joint-Convener of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council— the platform that spearhead quota reform movement last year — Bin Yamin Mollah, spoke among others.
