“We’ve talked in a very flexible manner. The Green Line authorities neither told us that they have problems and they can’t pay the fine nor they contacted Russel’s family to settle the matter. The attitude of Green Line didn’t seem good to us,” it said.
The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the observations while hearing the progress of paying compensation to Russel.
The court also said those who run business should have human values.
At the beginning of the hearing, Green Line’s lawyer Advocate Md Waziulla told the court that the bus company did not contact him and prayed to the court to withdraw his power to conduct the hearing.
Later, the court set June 25 for the next hearing.
Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Basar and Assistant Attorney General M Saiful Alam stood for the state.
On May 15, the HC asked Green Line Paribahan to pay within May 22 either the rest of Tk 45 lakh or at least a partial amount as compensation to Russel but Green Line failed to pay the money and also escaped the hearing today.
On April 10, Green Line paid Tk 5 lakh to Russel and the court gave them one month to pay the rest Tk 45 lakh but Green Line had been delaying the process so far.
A luxury coach of Green Line Paribahan hit Russel’s car from behind as it stood stationary on the slope of Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar in the city on April 28 last year.
As Russel stepped out of the car to assess the damage to the car, bus driver Kabir Hossain, in an act that has drawn outrage for its sheer idiocy and callous disregard for a fellow human being, drove the bus over him and fled the scene.
Later, police detained the bus along with the driver from near the Jatiya Press Club.
Russel’s left leg was amputated from the thigh down in the process of being run over.
