The daylong programme started with hoisting of the national flag at half-mast by High Commissioner Md Mustafizur Rahman, officials of the High Commission and members of expatriate Bangladesh community and Bangladeshi community organisations in Singapore.
A special prayer was offered for salvation of the language martyrs as well as seeking divine blessings for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh.
A one-minute silence was also observed as a respect to the martyrs.
Messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were also read out in the morning session.
A discussion meeting on the significance of the day was held in the evening.
High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman paid glowing tributes to the language martyrs and said the International Mother Language Day has now become a day of celebration of linguistic diversity around the world.
He recalled the contribution of the martyrs as well as the role of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the historic Language Movement.
He underscored the significance of the Language Movement in the evolution of the national history which in fact sowed the seeds of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
The discussion segment was rounded off with a colorful multi-lingual cultural program.
The stellar performance by the artists, including children from multi-racial and multi-lingual backgrounds, enthralled the audience and manifested a unique harmony of the nations for the protection of cultural diversity.
Representatives from social and cultural organisations, students of different educational institutions and a large number of the members of the Diaspora attended along with their families.
