Four students of Dhaka University (DU) have gone on a hunger strike on the campus to press for a four-point demand, including capital punishment of the rapist of one of their fellows.
The four students are Sifatul Islam of the Philosophy department, Saiful Islam Rasel of Soil, Water and Environment department, Mostafizur Rahman Rafiz of Information Technology Institute and Abdur Rahman of History department.
Sifatul began the hunger strike in front of the ‘Raju Sculpture’ around 3:30am on Monday in protest against the rape incident. The three others joined him on Tuesday.
Their other demands are creating social awareness against rape, forming a special tribunal to punish culprits and ensuring students’ security.
The second-year DU student was allegedly raped in the city’s Kurmitola area on Sunday night.
The victim is now undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Victim's friends said she was picked up by an unidentified man after she got down from a university bus around 7pm and was made unconscious.
Later, the miscreant took her to a nearby place and raped her.
The victim regained her senses around 10pm and contacted her classmates.
