Several hundred students of different departments took part in the demonstration. The students blockaded the university’s administrative building to press home their demand.
The agitating students threatened to continue their demonstration boycotting regular classes and examinations.
Later, the students went to the main entrance of the university and locked it around 2:00pm. No university bus, car or motorcycle could leave the campus during their agitation.
Five agitating students started a hunger strike unto death for the fulfillment of their demand.
IU student advisor Professor Paresh Chandra Barman along with the proctors’ body tried to calm the situation but they failed.
Two students poured kerosene on their own bodies and asked the student advisor to burn them.
The students alleged that the university authorities increased the fees under different headings all in the name of development of the university from its 2017-18 academic session. “We have already submitted a memorandum to the university administration but they did not look into the matter,” they added.
Nourin Nusrat, a student of Law department, was taken to IU central hospital as she fell sick.
IU Pro-VC Professor M Shahinoor Rahman told UNB that the students might have been guided by a vested quarter, adding that that they would settle the matter after holding a discussion with departmental chairmen and respective faculty deans on Wednesday.
