A minor girl drowned and 30 people went missing as two boats capsized in the Padma River at Char Khidirpur of the city on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Mariam, 6, daughter of Roton of Basua area in the city.
A youth who managed to swim ashore said the boats were carrying more than 35 passengers who were returning home after attending a post-wedding reception at the groom’s house at Char Khidirpur.
Both the boats sank in the mid-river around 7pm due to heavy currents.
Although five of the passengers managed to swim ashore, the rest remained missing.
Abdur Rauf, senior station officer of Rajshahi Sadar Fire Service and Civil Defence, said they were trying to rescue the missing people.
Two of the rescuees were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said Assistant sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam, in-charge of RMCH police outpost.
