The deceased was identified as Sumon Hossain, 17, son of domestic worker Nazma Begum.
Sumon had been working at a fish depot owned by one Abul Hossain aka Chhoto Abul for past four years, according to his grandfather Subidar Rahman.
Manager of the depot Alauddin, accusing Sumon of stealing Tk 500, had tortured him till 11 PM at night on Friday. When Sumon’s mother went pleading mercy for her boy, she too was harassed by Alauddin – the likely trigger for Sumon’s suicide.
Although his mother was able to bring him home, after she left
for work early next morning, Sumon hanged himself. She was to find the body on her return.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said inspector of Monirampur Police Station Enamul Haque.
Locals said Alauddin, the warehouse manager who inflicted what should correctly be seen as child abuse on Sumon and harassed his mother, was trying to settle the matter with money.
Owner Abul Hossain defended the manager and blamed the victim through unverifiable claims.
Police meanwhile are sticking to the “no one filed complaint” script.
