He came up with the accusation while addressing a discussion at Dampara Police Lines on the occasion of the National Mourning Day.
“The BNP doesn’t want the Rohingyas to go back to [their homeland in Rakhine State in] Myanmar,” he said. “Their motive is to do politics with Rohingya issue.”
Bangladesh is currently hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas. Most of them came here after Aug 25, 2017 when the Myanmar military launched a brutal offensive targeting the mainly-Muslim ethnic minority.
Myanmar does not recognise the Rohingyas as citizens despite having lived in the country for generations. State-sponsored discrimination against them stretches back decades.
Two attempts to send them back to their homeland were called off because of the unwillingness of the Rohingyas. The BNP criticised the government and said it was a diplomatic failure.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Mahabubur Rahman presided over the meeting. Additional Police Commissioner Amena Begum, Deputy Police Commissioner Bijoy Bosak, Senior Assistant Commissioner (Double Mooring Zone) Ashiqur Rahman and CMP School & College Principal Shibli Sadique, among others, were also present.
