Soumya completed his ton off 94 balls, by which he joined Tamim Iqbal in the record of fastest Test ton by Bangladeshi batsmen.
“I think I never batted against this type of bowling attack. The ball was bouncing too much from the back of the length. I never batted with this kind of field set-up as well,” Soumya said at the end of the match at Hamilton.
The southpaw started playing Test cricket in 2015 but never passed the 100-run mark before this match. He was axed from the Test squad that is touring New Zealand. But an injury to Shakib Al Hasan paved the way for his inclusion in the squad.
Before hitting the first Test ton coming into the 13th match, Soumya accumulated four fifties to his name in this format of the game.
However, the left-handed top-order batsman said the century is meaning nothing to him as the team suffered a heavy loss at the hands of the New Zealanders.
“I’m excited to hit the first Ton in the Test cricket but not too much as the team lost the match. It would have been a reason for more excitement had the team won the game,” the southpaw further said.
“They might have batted again if we could have batted more on the similar mindset. But still, the first Test ton is a special knock,” the left-hander also said.
Along with Soumya, Mahmudullah also struck a ton- 146 - which is now his best innings in Test cricket.
Soumya and Mahmudullah posted 235 runs in the fifth wicket stand but that was not enough to dodge a big defeat by an innings and 52 runs as Bangladesh were bowled out for 429/10 in the last innings.
