After the day’s frustrating defeat, touring Bangladesh remained at the bottom of the five-team Group A with empty hand following their seven-wicket losses against England in a rain-interrupted 2nd match and a humiliating 60-run defeat against hosts West Indies in the first match.
Bangladesh women’s team, which regained confidence in 2018 after passing a frustrating 2017, clinching the their maiden Asia Cup crown shocking their giant South Asian rivals India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and emerged champions in World T20 Qualifiers, came down to earth losing to Pakistan 0-3 in home series, also failed to recover lapses in the ongoing T20 World meet.
Hosts West Indies topped the Group A list securing four points from straight two matches, England followed the leader neck and neck collecting three points from two outings, Sri Lanka and South Africa were also in the semifinal race with three and two points, playing two and three matches respectively.
Bangladesh invited the Islanderers to bat first after winning the toss and restricted them for a chase able score of 97 for 7 in stipulated 20 overs featuring 31 runs from former captain cum all rounder Shashikala Siriwardene.
The Lanka all-rounder batted until the last over of an innings that never found momentum and furnished her 33-ball 31 runs innings with two fours and one six.
Later, she bowled superbly to grab two wickets for 10 runs in her four overs spell forcing the Asia Cup champions Bangladesh to surrender early in the chase and was adjudged player of the match.
Bangladeshi pacer Jahanara Alam, giving the team a strong chance once again, utilizing the conditions right from the first ball, claimed the wickets of the match’s highest scorer Shashikala Siriwardene, Yasoda Mendis and De Silva. Jahanara grabbed three wickets for 21 runs in her quota four over bowling.
Besides spinner Khadiza Tul Kubra, Fahima Khatun and Rumana Ahmed took one wicket each conceding 15, 16 and 26 runs respectively.
Replying to an easy target, Bangladesh hadn't even made 30 in the half way of their innings due to shaky start and found their lack of intent getting anywhere close to the target. In all, they hit only three boundaries and played 75 dot balls in the innings making their early exit from a major tournament as they bundled out cheaply for 77 runs in 20 overs.
Among the Bangladesh batters, only two down Nigar Sultana (20), opener Ayasha Rahman (11) and tail-ender Ritu Moni (11) were able to make the double figure.
AC Jayangani picked up three Bangladesh wickets for 7 runs while player of the match Shashikala Siriwardene and KDU Prabadhena took wickets each giving away 10 and 6 runs respectively.
In the remaining group match Bangladesh to face South Africa on November 19 at the same venue.
