Ahead of the long-awaited DUCSU elections scheduled for March 11, BCL placed the out-of-character demand that speaks to a core issue of student life, with virtually no connection to politics on the national stage.
Several hundred leaders and activists of BCL from different departments and residential halls participated in the human-chain held in front of the DU central library from 12.30 pm to 2pm.
BCL president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon said, "Many physically challenged students are studying at DU. But there is no opportunity for them to access the central library. We urge authorities to modernise our library with digitalisation and capable of meeting each student’s needs."
BCL also called on the authorities to ensure adequate seating in all the residential hall libraries and reading rooms.
BCL general secretary Golam Rabbani said, "The University gets a huge budget each year, but the authorities use it to only fulfill the teachers' needs by this budget. Unfortunately students’ legitimate demands even aren’t met yet.”
He also said, "From this human chain we are demanding the authorities declare a timeline to build a modern, digital and world-class library which can meet the needs of 43,000 students."
"We promised we will fight for general student's needs if we win in upcoming DUCSU election," Rabbani added.
BCL’s DU unit president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hossain, among others, addressed the human chain.
