Local people caught the deer, locally known as ‘Chitral Harin’ after a chase from Chilabazar in Mongla upazila in the morning.
On information, a team of the Forest Department went to the spot and recovered the deer.
Forest Department sources said the deer might have entered the locality after being chased by a tiger from the Sundarbans.
Hawladar Azad Kabir, officer-in-charge of Karamjal Wildlife Reproduction Centre, said the deer came to the area through a river and when they were informed about the incident, a team went to the spot and released it into the forest.
Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East Zone, said they are investigating the incident and a source was appointed to unearth the reason behind it.
He also suspects that the deer might have been forced to enter the locality due to the rampant activity of poachers in the forest.
