Accused Ishtiak Ahmed Imon, deputy Information Technology affairs secretary of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman hall unit of BCL, beat up hall canteen manager Shahabuddin with a stump – increasingly the weapon of choice for thugs replacing hockey sticks.
Imon, a student of Management department, already enjoyed notoriety through his alleged involvement in admissions forgery. The impunity he also enjoyed came through as he locked the hall canteen after beating the manager at room no. 322, claimed eyewitnesses.
Victim Shahabuddin alleged that on Thursday morning, Khalid Hasan Robin, executive member of hall unit Chhatra League, told him in the morning to go and meet Imon immediately in his room.
"Around 9am I went to meet Imon in his room and asked for due amount. That’s when he started beating me with a cricket stump. While doing so he looked unnatural, as if possessed like a drug addict," Shahabuddin claimed.
While trying to resist him, Shahabuddin sustained severe injuries to his hands, for which he was treated initially at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Although this correspondent tried to reach Imon several times, his phone was switched off.
Hall Provost Zia Rahman said: "I am already notified about this and found the incident to be true."
"A three-member probe body has been formed already and they are given three days to file the report," he added.
Hall union BCL secretary Abdullah Al Masud Lemon said: "It is very unfortunate to do so using the name of Chhatra League. We will take organizational steps immediately."
Meanwhile, the hall union also condemned the attack on the canteen manager through a press release, signed by vice-president (VP) Shoriful Islam Shakil and General Secretary (GS) Hasibul Hossen Santo.
