Khayyam was born in 1048 at Nishapur, Khorasan (present-day Iran). As a mathematician, he is best credited for his work on the classification and solution of cubic equation where he had provided geometric solutions by the intersection of cones.
He was ahead of his time in the vast field of algebra and geometrics.
As an astronomer, he is credited with designing Jalali calendar - a solar calendar with a very precise 33-year intercalation cycle.
Khayyam is also regarded as a great poet who nurtured philosophical attributes such as pessimism and nihilism in his works and best known for writing in the form of quatrains or ‘Rubaiyat’.
English poet and writer Edward FitzGerald translated Khayyam’s quatrains into English in the book ‘Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam’ (1859) and it achieved great success as a component of orientalism at the end of 19th century.
Google had previously honoured this legend with its customised doodle back in 2012.
