Dhaka, Dec 27 (UNB) – Hours after announcing that the Awami League-Grand Alliance’s decision will be the final, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Thursday night backed off his stance, saying his party’s independent candidates outside the alliance will remain in the field.
In a statement, he also claimed that his speech delivered at a press conference was presented wrongly by different media which made him very disappointed.
“Jatiya Party candidates outside the Grand Alliance will contest the election independently from their respective seats with Plough symbol,” Ershad said.
The Jatiya Party chairman also asked his party’s open candidates not to quit the election race. “They (candidates) have been asked to be there in the election field.”
HM Ershad, who returned home from Singapore only three days before the election, on Thursday announced to step aside from the election race in Dhaka-17 constituency.
Speaking at a press conference at his Baridhara residence in the afternoon, he also said the Grand Alliance’s decision will be the final one.
The Jatiya Party chief said the party’s open candidates will support the Grand Alliance contenders in their respective seats.
He, however, said those who have possibilities to win the election will remain in the race.
As many as 29 Jatiya Party contenders are participating in the election under the Grand Alliance and the party also fielded some 145 candidates to run independently.
