Around 300 students gathered in front of the library and started a sit-in after library staffs stopped them from entering the place with bags.
“We don’t have enough facilities in the dormitories for studying. Library is the only place where we can study without any hassle,” second-year philosophy student Rafiqul Islam said.
Abu Bakkar Siddik, an MA student, said the new decision was “really problematic” for them.
Final-year student Masud Hasan said Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder, the former acting teacher of the library, had taken student-friendly decisions including keeping the library open throughout the week, allowing students with bags, and creating rooms for more students.
“If the university authorities want to bring the library under proper management, they can check the bags when we leave,” he said.
Library Sub-Registrar Badrul Alam promised to resolve the issue through discussions with officers, staffs, and students.
An official notification signed by acting library teacher Professor Hanif Ali was published on Sunday, triggering protests from students on the library premises in the afternoon.
