Jahangirnagar University, July 24 (UNB)- Teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University urged the authority to reformulate its master plan for infrastructural development of the campus as they alleged that a good number of trees will be cut off if the current plan is implemented.
They made the request at 1pm while attending a solidarity rally in front of old register building on the campus on Wednesday. The rally was organized by Jahangirnagar University Student-Teacher Unity Platform.
Professor Anu Muhammad, a renowned economist of the country and teacher of JU’s economics department, said erecting buildings is not solution of problems. While formulating a master plan for infrastructural development, various issues like environment, waste management, communication, culture and security should be considered.
He urged the authority to reformulate the plan after receiving views of students and teachers.
‘’The university administration should make the plan available for all,’’ added the professor.
Jamal Uddin Runu, professor of environmental science department at the university, said the authority is implementing its fictitious plan though renowned architect Mazharul Islam formulated a well-planned design for infrastructural development of the campus.
However, students at the rally warned the university administration of indiscriminate cutting of trees.
Professor Syed Ferdous of the Department of Anthropology, Professor Jamal Uddin, Professor Nurul Islam, Professor Anwarullah Bhuiyan, Associate Professor Raihan Raine, president of Chhatra union’s JU unit Nojir Amin Chowdhury Joy, general secretary of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front’s JU unit Md Didar, joint convener of Bangladesh General Students' Right Conservation Council Joynal Abedin Shishir, among others, were present at the occasion.
