The High Court (HC) on Monday extended the bail for a year in two defamation cases filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Kazi Md. Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order after hearing on two petitions.
Advocate Barrister Kaysar Kamal stood for the petitioner accompanied with Advocate Kamruzzaman Mamun and Salma Sultana Soma.
On June 18, the HC granted six-month bail to Khaleda in the cases and the bail tenure expired in November.
One defamation case was filed against her for hurting religious sentiment in 2014 while another in 2016 for making derogatory remarks against Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman.
Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in February 8, 2018. She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year.
