Dhaka, Oct 3 (UNB) – Mentioning that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release is a legal matter, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said there is no option but to follow the legal procedure for her release.
The minister made the statement while talking to reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday.
He said Khaleda was jailed in several cases, including that of graft. “Her release is fully a legal matter and it’s under the jurisdiction of court. She has not been imprisoned for political reason that she could be freed through a movement.”
Replying to another question, the minister said, “WikiLeaks revealed the involvement of Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman in the 21st August grenade attack. What will BNP say now?”
BNP MPs on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to see their ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia for herself and take steps for her release on bail.
GM Siraj made the call while talking to reporters after visiting Khaleda Zia at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) along with three other party MPs.
Khaleda has been receiving treatment at the BSDMMU since April 1 last.
Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in February 8, 2018. She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year, though her party claims both the cases are ‘politically motivated’.
