“Absence of a local culture of self-reliance is a bottleneck and lack of PPP projects is a predicament for creation of own global corporation,” he said.
Dr Nawaz Sharif made the remarks on the closing day of the two-day 'Innovation Stakeholders Consultative Conference' arranged by Daffodil International University at Daffodil Tower in the city's Dhanmondi area.
Around 50 representatives from 15 public and private organisations took part in four sessions on the last day of the conference.
Dr M. Nawaz Sharif said whole commitment at every stage is necessary for innovative economy in the country.
He also underscored the need for regulatory oversight for intellectual property rights as well as giving incentives by government procurement contracts.
The internationally famed expert on technological innovation and technology transfer also lamented that the Research and Development (R&D) investments in the country are almost insignificant. "Research and Development (R&D) activities should be performed in the advanced academic institutions as well as public and private R&D institutions have to be at state-of-the-art level,” he added.
Dr Nawaz Sharif expressed his gratitude to all the attendees of the two-day conference, saying “Technology is a key for the wise. Throughout the conference, we’ve discussed how it can be used.”
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industry Corporation (BSCIC) Chairman Mostak Hasan attended the closing ceremony of the conference as the chief guest. DIU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Yousuf Mahbubul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Dr M. Nawaz Sharif is the Principal Consultant for Technology Management in Myriad Solutions Inc, Maryland, USA.
In the recent past, he served as an Adjunct Professor in the Engineering Professionals Program of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and a Visiting Professor in the Project Management Program of the George Washington University (GWU).
Earlier, he was a Management of Technology Chair Professor and the Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost) of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) of Bangkok, Thailand.
He also served as the Director of the UN-ESCAP's Asian and Pacific Center for Transfer of Technology (APCTT), Bangalore, India; and a Doctoral Program Director of the Graduate School of Management and Technology (GSMT) at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), Adelphi of Maryland.
