The Home Minister came up with the remark after vising injured policemen at Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital in the city in the evening.
Terming the incident as unexpected, he said it was clear that ‘the attack on police was preplanned and organised’ to foil the upcoming election.
Most of the policemen were beaten with sticks. Though the injuries are not so critical, the Home Minister maintained there might have been loss of life. “Perhaps they have plans to foil the election or have other motives by carrying out some violence and killings,” he added.
Replying to a question, the Home Minister said video footages of the Nayapaltan violence are being scrutinized. Action will be taken after identifying the culprits, he added.
IGP Dr Javed Patwary, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and senior police officers were present.
At least 50 people, including 23 police, were injured in a clash between BNP leaders and activists and law enforcers in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office on the third day of the party’s nomination form sale on Wednesday.
Police lobbed teargas shells, rubber bullets and charged batons while two police cars were torched during the clash and began around 12:50pm and lasted for around 25 minutes.
However, both the government and BNP traded a blame game over the clash ahead of the national election billed for December 30.
