"Bangladesh is moving forward in every sector…there’s no alternative to proper and qualified leadership to continue the trend of development. Universities are the ideal places for flourishing leadership quality. It’s the duty of teachers to do that,” he said.
President Hamid said this while presiding over the second convocation of the Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) held its premises.
He also stressed the need for taking initiatives so that students and teachers could utilise the resources and potentials of the country through their qualitative research and take part in the country’s advancement.
"Student politics must be the ideology-based one. Students will have to develop a culture of independent and ideal politics avoiding dependence on individuals or parties. This will help grow dedicated, skilled and competent leadership in the country," he said.
The President urged all to remain vigilant so that students cannot engage themselves in anti-social activities such as extortion, terrorism, drug or militant activities.
Teachers should put emphasis on extracurricular activities and practice of free-thinking along the regular academic programmes, he added.
Hamid lauded the initiative of opening Bangladesh and Liberation War Studies department at the university to teach on the struggle of the Liberation War and its glorious history.
“It's really a very praiseworthy initiative. The decision of introducing a compulsory course, 'History of the Emergence of Independent Bangladesh’, has made me happy and proud as a freedom fighter."
Pointing to the 'Delta Plan 2100', the President said, "As part of the plan, the government will have to ensure pure drinking water for coastal areas, collection of marine resources and its proper utilization.
He added that NSTU will have to play a vital role in implementing the plan as the university has a lot of scope for conducting research for its geographical position which covers blue economy, delta formation, mangrove forest and eco-tourism.
