Dhaka, Aug 3 (UNB) – The government on Saturday cancelled the Eid vacation and weekly holidays of officials and employees of the Local Government Division, (LGD), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) until further notice.
In an office order, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives said the move was aimed at successfully carrying out anti-mosquito drives.
The officials and employees who are currently on leave will have to join work within 24 hours, it said.
The order took immediate effect and it will remain in place until further notice.
Dhaka, the overcrowded Bangladeshi capital, is at the centre of dengue outbreak. The situation has worsened this year with hundreds of cases being reported every day.
In 24 hours till Saturday morning, 1,649 new dengue patients were hospitalised.
Official data showed that 22,919 people were hospitalised with dengue since January 1.
Currently, 6,858 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at hospitals. Although the government says 18 dengue patients have so far died, unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is higher.
