GM Shahatab Uddin, returning officer and regional election officer of Rangpur, allocated the symbols to six candidates at his office in the morning.
Electronic Voting Machines will be used at 175 polling centres, he said.
The by-poll is scheduled for October 5.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad who won all the elections he had taken part from this seat since in 1991.
Leading contestants of this by-election are former Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad’s son Shad Ershad, BNP alliance backed Rita Rahman, and Gonoforum’s Kazi Md Shohidullah. The other candidates are Shofiqul Alam of National People’s Party, Towhidur Rahman of Khelafat Majlish and independent candidate Hossain Mokbul Shariar Asif, the nephew of Ershad.
Nine candidates submitted nominations. Of them, Awami League’s Advocate Rezaul Karim Razu withdrew his nomination as per the party decision while two other nominations were cancelled after scrutiny.
The returning officer urged candidates to strictly follow the electoral code of conduct.
A total of 4,42,072 voters – 2,21,310 male and 2,20,762 female – are expected to exercise their franchise.
