After this period, vehicles without fitness certificates would not be allowed on the roads, the court said.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority has been directed to publicise the order through the mass media.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam issued the order after the BRTA submitted a detailed report on vehicles whose fitness certificates had not been renewed.
BRTA lawyer Md Rafiul Islam said 4,79,320 vehicles lack fitness certificates. He said the BRTA and district magistrates are jointly operating drives against these vehicles.
Between 2018 and 2019, a total of 39,837 cases were filed against vehicles without fitness certificates and they were fined Tk 6,00,72,392, the report said.
On June 24, the court inquired about the number of vehicles plying without renewing their fitness certificates and the action BRTA has taken against them.
Supreme Court lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub brought the court’s attention to the matter referring to a newspaper report of a national daily. The court later issued a rule and an order over the matter.
