Bus drivers went on an indefinite strike on Thursday demanding cancellation of some sections of the Road Transport Act which came into effect on Friday last.
Meanwhile, the sudden bus strike caused immense sufferings to the passengers as no bus left the district and inter-district bus services remained shut since the morning.
Abdul Kaium, general secretary of Zila Workers’ Union, said “It is not possible for us to drive when there is a law over paying a fine of Tk 5 lakh.”
Some drivers refrained from their works that created sufferings to people, said Lelin Rayhan, convener of District Transport Owners Association.
“We have been talking to the Deputy Commissioner and will talk to the leaders of labour unions,” he said.
The much-talked Road Transport Act came into effect on November 1. The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry issued a notification in this regard on October 22.
The 'Road Transport Bill-2018' was passed by parliament on September 19, 2018, keeping a provision of maximum five years' jail for any death or serious injuries caused by reckless or negligent driving.
