Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) on Wednesday demanded the authorities of Dainik Somoyer Alo to take responsibility of the family of its city editor and chief reporter Humayun Kabir Khokon.
He died at Regent Hospital in Uttara on Tuesday night at the age of 47.
DUJ President Kuddus Afrad and General Secretary Sazzad Alam Topu mourned the death of the journalist.
In a statement, they alleged that Dainik Somoyer Alo authorities are forcing their staff to come to office without ensuring their safety during coronavirus outbreak.
Most of the employees walk to the office as public transport remains shut.
The DUJ leaders demanded that if the media offices are kept open, there should be news sharing among similar organisation and less important assignments should be avoided.
“The risk must be reduced. To ensure the safety of colleagues, isolation newsrooms need to be set up for journalists who will go to collect news in the field,” the DUJ said.
