Faridpur, Aug 10 (UNB) - Two people were shot to death and 14 others injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League at Kaichail union in Nagarkanda upazila on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Roushan Ali Mia, 52, son of Abu Bakar, and Tuhin Mia, 25, son of Raihan Mia.
Locals said Hanif Mia alias Hridoy, Jubo League’s central committee member, and Kabir Hossain alias Thandu, chairman of Kaichail union parishad and general secretary of the union unit of AL, had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the locality.
As a sequel of the enmity, their followers engaged in a clash near Kaichail Darul Ulum Madrasa around 5:30pm, said witnesses.
During the melee, both the feuding groups traded gunshots, leaving 16 people injured, they said.
The injured were first taken to Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex from where seven of them were shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nagarkanda Police Station.
However, doctors at the hospital declared two of them brought dead, he said.
Both the groups blamed each other for the incident.
Kabir alleged that Hridoy and his brother Hasan Miah came to the locality in a microbus and opened fire on his followers at the madrasa ground before fleeing.
Hridoy said Kabir’s associates swooped on him and his followers when they came to the village after a long time on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
