Supreme Court lawyer Syeda Shahin Ara Laili moved the court in public interest.
Secretaries to cabinet, railways, local government and road transport and highways, chiefs of railway and police have been made defendants.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman might hear the petition, said Advocate Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan, the petitioner’s lawyer.
Quoting the writ petition, Aklas said there are 1,412 level crossings in the country. According to a report of BUET's Accident Research Institute, 244 people were killed and 228 injured in 235 railway accidents last year.
In 2017, 229 people died and 155 were injured in 221 accidents while 59 people lost their lives and 46 were injured in 56 accidents in 2016.
Aklas said 946 crossings lay unprotected although the railways have an option to put up fences. “But no steps are being taken despite so many accidents,” he said.
