The victim was identified as Mohammad Hanif, general secretary of ward-8 unit of Jubo League in Eojbalia union.
Witnesses said supporters of Awami League’s Noakhali-4 election candidate Ekramul Karim Chowdhury and BNP’s M Shahjahan brought out separate processions in Eojbalia union in the afternoon as part of election campaign.
The clash broke out when the BNP followers attacked the procession of the Awami League men.
Talking to UNB, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sudharam Police Station Anwar Hossain said the BNP men also hurled pepper powder at the Awami League men.
Amid a chase and counter-chase during the melee, Hanif suffered bullet wounds.
He was taken to General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Syed Mohiuddin Abdul Azim, resident medical officer of Noakhali General Hospital, said Hanif might have died due to excessive bleeding as he suffered bullet injuries in his legs.
Meanwhile, Ekram Chowdhury visited the hospital and consoled the family members of Hanif.
Local Awami League claimed that a group of 5-6 youths swooped on Isamil and smashed his with bricks and then shot him.
It blamed local BNP-Jamaat men for the attack.
In another incident, another Jubo League leader, M Zahir Uddin, 30, suffered bullet injuries in an attack by miscreants at Karimpur in Sadar upazila around 12:30pm.
Ruling party candidate Ekramul claimed that criminals first chopped Zahir with sharp weapons and then shot him in the head.
He was first taken to Noakhali General Hospital and then sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
