Jamalpur, Feb 28 (UNB) – An activist of ruling Awami League was killed and five others injured in a pre-polls violence centering the upcoming Upazila Election in Dewanganj municipality area on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Khalek, 48, a supporter of Awami League nominated chairman candidate Abul Kalam Azad.
Aminul Haq, officer-in-charge of Dewanganj Police Station, said the supporters of Solaiman Haq, a rival candidate of the same party along with arms and weapons swooped on the supporters of Abul Kalam Azad during electioneering at Dwanganj intersection around 11:45 pm.
At one stage, both groups exchange several rounds of gunshots, leaving one dead on the spot and five others injured.
The injured were taken to Jamalpur General Hospital, said the OC.
Meanwhile, a tense situation was prevailing in and around the area following the incident. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble, he added.
