He has played three Tests, two ODIs and nine T20Is for the Tigers. Although he is considered to be one of the best wicketkeepers in the country, his form made it difficult for him to secure a place in the national team.
The right-handed batsman represented Dhaka Dynamites during the last season of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He played 15 matches and scored 194 runs with an average of 24.25 with the best innings of 33. In most of the matches, he batted after lower-middle order.
Shohan says he believes scoring an average of 24 in such a position is not bad if that helps his team.
“Everyone plays with different mindsets. Some just count the fifties and hundreds. But it’s different for me. My theory is, scoring 20 is enough if that helps the team. Personal satisfaction is more important to me. I am happy if I can help my team with a short innings of 20,” he told the media on Friday at national academy ground ahead of the Dhaka Premier League T20.
Shohan got his international cap in 2016 in Khulna in a T20I against Zimbabwe. He started his ODI career in December of the same year against New Zealand. During the New Zealand tour, he got his Test cap as well.
Currently, he is focused on the upcoming T20 tournament. He said it will be a great platform for local players to display their strength in the shortest format of the game.
“Some of the players take part in BPL, but the Dhaka Premier League is the biggest domestic tournament for local players. Having a chance to play T20 cricket in Dhaka League means more local guys, who do not get chance in BPL, can show their skills,” he said.
Shohan played the last season of Dhaka League for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club. He played 12 matches and scored 546 runs with an average of 54.6 with a hundred and three fifties. He helped his team finish as runners-up. He believes they can do better.
“We wanted to have a balanced team, and we are lucky because we got that. But team spirit is the most important thing. We finished the last season as runners-up in spite of having a mediocre team. Team spirit was our main strength. We just started our practice today. If we can ensure a better team spirit, we can hope better results,” he said.
